The default Keyboard Shortcuts in Ubuntu to maximize a window (Super+Up) or snap it to the sides (Super+Left/Right) relates to the current active window.

While setting up mouse gestures using logiops, I found out that this is a weird behavior. I rather want to maximize/minimize/snap affect the window below my mouse pointer just like the scroll wheel does.

How to do this, e.g. using xdotool ?

I'm trying to install the Printer Canon LBP2900 in Ubuntu 20.04.

Canon has Linux drivers for the printer on their homepage and I successfully installed them. But they are not working out of the box. I found many sources, saying that the drivers are dependent on some 32bit packages that have to be installed manually to make it work (the solution seems to work well for older Ubuntu versions, 16.04 and 18.04). But in 20.04 it is not working:

It comes down to the issue, that Ubuntu denies installation for good reasons:

After pressing Ctrl+Alt+F? to switch to another TTY (both graphical or not) I get a 3-4 seconds delay where I still see the "old" TTY before the screen switches (which is then almost instant).

In syslog, I can see that the seconds are lost right before this message:

  • Happens only after upgrade to 20.04.
  • Happens with both Displayport and HDMI
  • Interestingly the delay does not happen when the screen is locked, then also that line does not appear in syslog.

I had a similar issue before, but this was a delay when creating the new X session, while the new delay happens when shutting down the current X session.

How to find out (and eliminate) what is blocking the x-session shutdown ?

Switching to another already logged in user (Ctrl+Alt+F#) takes a long time (approx. 10 - 20 seconds).

First, the screen turns black, after some seconds the cursor appears, and then after some time the desktop appears. Sometimes the icons and text is scrambled which can be fixed by resetting Gnome (running r from Alt+F2).

How can I eliminate this annoying waiting time ??

I have Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 TI with current nvidia driver from standard repos.

Same setup using VGA cable works fine, it is the same issue for different monitors (one is Full HD and one is 4K).

I found a similar question, but it is very old and has a different setup and it has no suitable answers.

Example: https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/php7.2

php package depends on one of:

  • libapache2-mod-php7.2
  • php7.2-fpm
  • php7.2-cgi

Running sudo apt install php always installs the first of these dependencies, unless one of the others has been installed already. Even running sudo apt install php php-cli installs the first dependency.

How can I select e.g. php-cgi in one go ?

So instead of

sudo apt install php-cgi && sudo apt install php

I want something like

sudo apt install --select-dependency php-cgi php

Please note that php is just an example, I'm looking for a general answer.

I have this little example script:

for i in {1..100}; do
   echo $i
   sleep 0.1
done | whiptail --gauge "Doing something" 10 50 0

It works as it should, displaying a moving progress bar and quits when it reached 100.

Using the same for-loop without piping it to whiptail, I can stop it with Ctrl+C. But how can I interactively terminate the process piping to whiptail as Ctrl+C is not working here?

I'm trying to install libgdal-dev:

sudo apt-get install libgdal-dev

But it has unmet dependencies: Depends: libpng-dev

Which itself cannot be installed because:

libpng12-dev : Depends: libpng12-0 (= 1.2.54-1ubuntu1.1) but 1.2.54-5x0~ppa is to be installed

This package is installed from a ppa:

dpkg -s libpng12-0 | grep ^Maintainer
Maintainer: Otto Meier <[email protected]>

I want to keep that ppa as it provides GIMP 2.9.

Question:

  • How can I install libpng12-dev and libgdal-dev (maybe ignoring or manually changing certain dependencies) ?

  • or generally: How to install packages when dependency is already installed in another version from PPA ?

(Hint: Installing GIMP with Snap is neither preferred nor possible)

What I tried:

I installed libpng12-dev ignoring libpng12-0 dependecy (via):

apt download libpng12-dev
sudo dpkg --ignore-depends=libpng12-0 -i libpng12-dev_1.2.54-1ubuntu1.1_amd64.deb

This worked.
Also, libgdal-dev still had unmnet dependencies, so I did the same:

sudo apt install libgdal-dev
sudo dpkg --ignore-depends=libpng12-0 -i libgdal-dev_2.2.2+dfsg-1~xenial1_amd64.deb #png12-dev_1.2.54-1ubuntu1.1_amd64.deb

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libgdal-dev:

Trying to use any snap package, I run into following issue:

$ gimp
cannot create user data directory: /local/home/user/snap/gimp/40: Read-only file system

(Gimp is just an example).

I have my $HOME in /local/home/$USER/ (I cannot change this!) and found that people have the same issue on the snap-store forum: https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/how-can-i-use-snap-when-i-dont-use-home-user/3352 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/snapcraft/+bug/1620771

In this thread, people say /home is hard-coded in snap and they suggest to use a bind-mount to solve this.

What I tried:

$ sudo mount --bind $HOME /home/$USER

ls correctly lists the content of my $HOME

$ ls /home/$USER

I also added the additional home dir to /etc/apparmor.d/tunables/home.d/my-homes:

$ cat /etc/apparmor.d/tunables/home.d/my-homes
@{HOMEDIRS}+=/local/home/

and to /var/lib/snapd/apparmor/snap-confine/my-homes:

$ cat /var/lib/snapd/apparmor/snap-confine/my-homes
mount options=(rw rbind) @{HOMEDIRS}/ -> /tmp/snap.rootfs_*/home/,

Running the snap again with bind-mount AND as well as OR changing files, the same error occurs as before.
How can I solve this ?

The source file of the ppa is created, but is empty:

I connect Evolution to an MS Exchange Server. That works just fine. But when waking up from suspend, Evolution cannot connect anymore with Error Message "Ticket Expired".

That happens regardless if Evolution was closed or not during suspend, it does still occur after closing and reopening Evolution.

After a reboot the connection works again.

How can I either fix this issue OR just do a full restart of evolution (including the eventual backend services) without having to reboot ?

Update:

I tried evolution -q and evolution --force-shutdown, but it didn't help.

Running with --gtk-debug=error:

Often, I'm leaving the terminal and the next day run it again. Then I want to be able to quickly go back to the last working directory.

I would like to do this using cd - as usual. But $OLDPWD is not kept between terminal sessions.

So I added an alias for exit to write pwd to a file and read it on the next start.

alias exit='pwd > ~/.lwd && exit;'
test -f ~/.lwd && export OLDPWD=`head -1 ~/.lwd`

That works perfectly for exit.

How can I create the same alias (or make a trap) for Ctrl+D ?
