So this happened.

I wasn't doing anything on my laptop . I turned it off and turned it back on again . A black screen with "Clearing orphaned inode" and then takes me to a screen where it asks me to put my root password or press ctrl+D. I tried my ubuntu password and I am sure I insert it correctly but it says it's wrong .

What are my options ?

Also, I tried reinstalling ubuntu ... which is not ideal ... but hey ... and when I select the booting devices and insert my bootable drive press ESC and F9 the usb doesn't show up (only the installed OS and the UEFI something).

My laptop is a dell da0135nq and the Ubuntu is LTS 18.04

I have tried to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on my HP machine and failed miserably.

I downloaded the Ubuntu image, created a bootable USB with rufus, turned off my laptop, turned it back on, pressed ESC and selected boot options (F9). I had 2 options both with UEFI after them. Picked the USB and it takes me to a screen with only one option -> Install UBUNTU.

I installed ubuntu that way. After going through the basic configuration (timezone, language etc) I get prompted with a message about forcing UEFI or "go back". Not sure what this is. I selected Continue with UEFI and it just started installing the UBUNTU. It works... only I cannot connect to the internet and I think there are 2 more profiles in it that I haven't created (must have been something that was already installed on my laptop from where I bought the laptop - INTEL IPOS - basically a presentation screen of the laptop's system configuration that I have seen many times running on the laptops on display in shops).

What is this? Is there a problem with the bios configuration? I have no idea how to go forward from here. At the moment I have a copy of ubuntu running on my latop, with no ability to connect to wireless connections and two random profiles that I haven't created.

I have been thinking of writing some sort of utility for linux that keeps track of all my installed software and configuration. Something that after doing a fresh install I can just run it and will restore my copy of ubuntu as it used to be before doing the fresh install.

I do not know exactly where to start with this. I know that you can get a list of user installed software from dpkg -i | grep ii.

I would really appreciate any suggestions.

I started getting this error whenever I restart my OS. I tried to erase and install Ubuntu Linux again and the installation freezes at "Running update-grub". Not sure if those two things are related.

I have a lenovo G500 and I run Ubuntu 18.04 LTS version on it.

I have tried a few things so far but with no success.

I modified crontab and and preceeded the command with @reboot mail.mailutils ...

I also created a .sh script, changed permission, added it to init.d modified configuration with sysv-rc-config --level 3 script on and added the necessary line to rc.local.

I would really appreciate if you could tell me where else to look!

I just want to send an email when I boot my Ubuntu (desktop not server) and when I turn it off.

The script that I am using is not even a script is

mail.mailutils -s "subject" emailaddress <<< "message" 

I have a text file that I wrote something in it and I would be really happy to get it back. It was a "transcript" of the videos I was watching to teach myselft Ubuntu. It was quite a lot and I would really like to get it back and that is why I need to fix this issue rather than installing another copy.

Whenever I log in I get to the log in screen, input my password and then the screen goes black (it first looks like in the past with the big CRT Tvs when you connected your SEGA console and then goes black). I cannot access anything. I am not saying that what I tried so far is exhaustive, there might be ways to open the terminal that I don't know (I'm a Noob). I don't know what other info may be useful. Please let me know if I need to add anything else.

I started having this problem after I bought a monitor and connected it to my laptop.
