I have Ubuntu set to auto mount two of my drives, which it successfully does every time I boot the system.

However, sometimes shortly after I boot my system Ubuntu will start to mount the other five drives I have in my computer. It seems to mount these other drives in a different order every time, mounting one after another until all of the drives are mounted. It's quite annoying.

This issue has only started to affect me since upgrading to 21.10

The two drives that should auto mount are ext4 drives, the other drives are a combination of ext4 and NTFS drives. They are all internal SATA drives, some are SSD some are HDD.

Any suggestions on how I can fix this issue?

Xfce (on Xubuntu) seems to have developed a problem on two different computers of mine where if it is left alone for a short period of time it freezes.

To elaborate a bit, any background processes will continue to run and I can see them running (for example; if I am doing something in the terminal I can still watch it running until it completes), however I am unable to click on anything or interact with the computer using my keyboard.

Interestingly enough I can still move the cursor and the cursor will change depending on what it is hovering over, I just can't click on anything.

I can also Ctrl Alt F1,2,3,4,5,6 to get to other shells, which do accept my keyboard inputs. However, the main shell running my desktop environment remains frozen.

The two computers are quite different (one is an AMD FX powered desktop, the other is a 2010 Macbook Air), and are running different versions of Xubuntu with different versions of Xfce (the PC is running Xubuntu 21.04 with Xfce 4.16, whereas the Mac is running Xubuntu 20.10 with Xfce 4.14). However, I have noticed a few similarities between the computers that might help in deciphering what the issue is.

Both of the computers:

1. Are running Xubuntu (the PC was running Ubuntu Studio Xfce prior to this where it did not experience the same problem).
2. Have Nvidia graphics cards with the drivers from the official graphics PPA: https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa

The PC has a GTX 970, the Mac has a GeForce 320M. Something else I have just noticed is that when I run screenfetch neither computer displays my GPU. Ubuntu Studio (which was installed on the PC before I installed Xubuntu) had no issue with showing the GPU. Might this be related to the issue?

3. Both are older computers (2010 and 2015) but have Xubuntu installed on M.2 drives (the PC's is an NVMe drive whereas the Mac's is SATA).

Any ideas on what might be causing this? Or how I can fix this?

I recently upgraded my install of Ubuntu Studio from 20.04 to 20.10

I know it has been recommended to reinstall this particular upgrade, however, as I wanted to keep Xfce (rather than switching to KDE) and didn't want to have to bother setting up my computer and syncing all of my files again, I decided to upgrade instead.

The upgrade seemed to have worked, however, I am now greeted with this in my apt autoremove, and I am pretty sure that a lot of these packages are quite important, for example it seems to want to remove most of Xfce.

So my questions are:

1. Will removing any of these packages mess up my install?
2. How do I remove them from being autoremoved, and generally fix this issue?

I want to display two temperatures on top of each other in my panel, but even with the text set to be x-small they won't fit.

There is an option to 'Small Horizontal Spacing' which reduces the gab between temps when placed next to each other, but not one to reduce a vertical gap when they are placed on top of each other.

Here is what it looks like currently:

And here is how much I have to stretch the panel out by if I do want it to display both temps:

The panel is set to be 27 row size. This size fits my window theme perfectly, I can afford to go a little bit bigger but not as big as I am currently required to in order to display both temps on top of each other.

I want to be able to either reduce the size of the gap separating the two (and also possibly reduce the gap between the first temp and the top of the panel), or to lower the font even lower so that both fit within the allotted panel size.

I have tried looking at the two config files displayed on the source code repository page but have not been able to work out a solution through there (the solution could be in one of those files and I might have missed it as I'm not exactly a programmer)

So how exactly can I make them both fit together, on top of one another in my panel?

Recently one of my drives refused to mount, showing the error message below:

Now luckily I was able to fix this thanks to another question on Ask Ubuntu that you can find here: "Structure needs cleaning" error - cannot mount partition

Basically I just had to fix the system, I entered the command:

sudo fsck.ext4 /dev/sda[NUMBER]

Just as stated in the answer to that post. That worked and everything in my drive is restored.

My question is however: How does something like this happen in the first place? I would like to know so that I can try and prevent this happening again in the future.

I'll give my setup as a guide to what I might have done wrong. I am using Ubuntu Studio 19.10. This hard drive isn't my boot drive, and neither does it contain my home partition. I have it set to mount on boot. I did this by enabling it in GNOME Disks. The drive is also formatted to ext4.

Even though I am using Xfce, I primarily use Nemo as my file manager, not Thunar.

I have it's status set to appear in my Conky, but aside from that it only gets used when I specifically run, open or save things in it. I never dismount it. When I shut my system down I just hit shutdown and normally everything is fine.

So what would cause an error like this? Is it just bad luck? Or is it something that I am doing?

Feel free to ask questions if I haven't been specific enough.

I've seen some stuff on here for this, but no solid answers.

I'm running Ubuntu Studio 18.10. I wanted to change the category icon in the Whisker Menu for Wine. I checked the Whisker Menu properties, and the default for editing applications was MenuLibre.

So I installed MenuLibre, changed the icon, and saved it. When I closed MenuLibre and opened the Whisker Menu the new icon was there, but lots of the icons for other programs were now missing. I would like to find a way to get them to show up again.

I can see stuff online of people reporting this issue, but no good solution. Any solutions to this would be welcome, as it gets pretty tiresome having to launch some of my programs from the terminal...

I have been using Clementine as my main music player for a while now, and it has always perfectly matched the theme of my desktop environment (be that Gnome, Cinnamon or Xfce) until I installed the latest version of Ubuntu.

I am currently running Ubuntu Studio 18.10, and for whatever reason it isn't following the system theme. I have checked in Clementine's settings through; Tools>Preferences>Appearance and I have got 'Use the system default colour set' ticked. I understand that Xfce is a GTK desktop environment and Clementine is created using Qt but this has never been an issue with other GTK environments before.

To show you what I mean here is a picture of Clementine running next to Thunar:

Hopefully someone knows the answer, the lighter theme Clementine is currently using just doesn't go with the rest of my system. Thank you in advance!

I am trying to slim down my Xubuntu installation. What Xfce specific packages can be removed without tanking the environment?

I have Ubuntu Studio 17.10 which comes with XFCE and LightDM preinstalled. I decided to install Gnome 3 but did not want to use GDM as I prefer LightDM.

My problem is that now when I use my Gnome session it wont black the screen after a while or lock out to the LightDM login screen, it just stays showing my Gnome desktop constantly. I have attempted to change this in Gnome Settings as well as in the LightDM GTK+ Greeter Settings but to no avail. I even set it to black screen/lock after 1 minute just to test it and nothing would work.

Here are the version numbers for the installed software:

LightDM 1.24.0

As the title implies, whilst using Ubuntu 17.10 I have come across a program called TeXdoctk in the Gnome menu. I cannot work out what its purpose is and attempting to uninstall it via:

sudo apt purge texdoctk

Has had no effect...

So what exactly is it? Is it safe to remove? And if so, how?

So I have looked this up and can only find solutions for older versions of Gnome.

Everywhere quotes this as the solution:

Which worked on on older versions of Gnome (such as the version available with Ubuntu 16.04LTS) but so far nothing is working on the most recent. I would like to replace Nautilus with Nemo, allowing Nemo to produce desktop icons (home folder and rubbish bin) as well as being able to drag my cursor along the desktop to highlight things.

My current Ubuntu version is 17.10 Gnome 3.26.1 Nemo 3.4.7 Nautilus 3.26.0

I have had no luck on both Wayland and Xorg.

I am using Ubuntu Studio 17.10 with the Gnome 3 Desktop and would love to use Wayland, however, when I do I find certain programs such as Gufw will not open, and will only work under the Xorg session.

Is there a way to make Xorg only programs open on Wayland? Or is it just a case of waiting for them to make the transition themselves?

Wayland seems to be making good progress so I think it would be a shame to continue to use the older Xorg, but until I can run ALL of my programs on Wayland I will be forced to stick with Xorg.

I have installed Gnome 3 alongside Xfce4 on Ubuntu Studio 17.10 but when I am in the Gnome session I cant click and drag my curser to highlight multiple items on the desktop.

I am wondering if it has anything to do with uninstalling Nautilus. The distro came with Thunar (as a part of Xfce4) and when I installed Gnome I decided to uninstall it and replace it with Nemo (which I am still trying to make show its icons on the desktop).

If not does anyone know how to enable curser drag highlighting?

I am running Ubuntu Studio 17.10 and would love to install Gnome to use alongside Xfce.

I tried running 'sudo apt install gnome', which did install Gnome but it also installed the Canonical Ubuntu version of gnome as well as changing my display manager to their version of GDM which is not what I wanted.

I also attempted to purge the Ubuntu-session however this lead to an incredibly unstable system and I resorted to reinstalling Ubuntu Studio.

Is there such thing as a minimal Gnome install, which allows me to simply install a single gnome session with only its bare essential components and nothing else?

I've been trying to install Ubuntu Studio 17.10 in Virtualbox 5.2 using both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 17.10 host machines but to no avail.

When I attempt to install it using the 17.10 ISO it either freezes during the instillation setup, or gives me the 'Errno 5' error message. On one occasion it has just dumped me onto the bash screen and then froze.

When I attempt to install a previous version of Ubuntu Studio and upgrade from there the upgrade seems to work and then when I reboot the virtual machine all I get is a frozen black screen.

I am able to install other Ubuntu 17.10 distros without error, however I am interested in testing how Ubuntu Studio 17.10 is setup and configured (i.e the low latency kernel and the Pulse/Jack integration) and not just the main programs it comes with as I know I can install those easily on other distros.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance :)

I'm considering moving from stock Ubuntu to Ubuntu Studio. My only concern is the low latency kernel. I've looked into what exactly it is, and know it will be great for my audio work, but I am wondering if it has any downsides?

Does it cause compatibility issues? Does it reduce the lifespan of my hardware?

Basically I am aware of the pros of the low latency kernel, I just want to know what the cons are so I can make an informed decision.

Whenever I click on software updater it says Failed to download repository information.

It's been saying this for the past few days now and I don't know why, my Internet connection is fine, I am able to manually download software.

Sometimes it crashes when I click okay, then attempts to look for updates again and gives me the same message.

Any ideas?

I was messing around with Ubuntu GNOME 16.10, when suddenly my mouse scroll wheel started acting up then reversed itself (up became down). It is occurring in multiple applications, including the 'Test Your Settings' part of the mouse config in System Settings. In System Settings I turned natural scrolling on and off, but nothing worked, I tried restarting Ubuntu to see if it would go away, but it didn't. With the same mouse on the host PC on Windows I don't have this issue, it just happens on this Ubuntu installation.

Do you have any ideas as to what I might have done or what went wrong? Or even better how it can be fixed?

I'm a Linux noob, currently playing with Ubuntu on VirtualBox, using this site a lot to help me and am looking to take the next step and dual boot. Hopefully the Linux gods on this website can help me yet again!

I am struggling to set my desktop up to how I would like it to look. I like parts of Unity but also want parts to be 'Windowsey'. I've tried making my ideal desktop on Cinnamon but couldn't get the applets to work how I would like.

So it uses the top and side bar of Unity (which I actually quite like), I also really like the Unity search feature. I would then want a 'Windowsey' taskbar at the bottom with its own menu, and also I want the window controls to be on the right side.

Hopefully you guys can help me (I'm assuming the answer is staring me in the face).

EDIT: I'm not against the idea of using a different desktop environment if that can get similar results.
