I partitioned my harddrive as this for Ubuntu (ext4), a Windows 10 partition (NTFS) and a partition to keep data (NTFS). I wanted to change permissions of a SSH key on the data partition using chmod 400, but strangely the command has no effect. Also changing the permissions on the ext4 partition, then copying the file to the NTFS partition results in the key having permissions 755 again... the reason for all this is that SSH requires a key with permissions 400 to login to a remote shell.

What can I do here?

When i go to https://nodejs.org/en/ i can download the linux tar.xz file (I understand this is not what is called a package).

I open the downloaded file in the Ubuntu extractor and find a directory with subdirectories bin, lib ... In bin is the node binary node. Where do I place now this node parent directory in my system and how do I correctly link it such that entering node on the command line calls this new node binary?

When I issue

sudo apt-get install octave

it installs octave 4.0.0. However our instructor tells us this version is broken and we have to install version 4.0.1. So I checked the available versions that the package manager has available:

mzh:~ $ sudo apt-cache madison octave
    octave | 4.0.0-3ubuntu9.1 | http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates/universe amd64 Packages
    octave | 4.0.0-3ubuntu9 | http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe amd64 Packages

Looks like only 4.0.0 are available. What do I have to do so that I can install 4.0.1?
