if this has been asked before I apologize.

Usually the advice for setting file permission in wordpress are folder 750 and file 640 with user and group www-data. Based on my understanding if user and group is the same then if somehow outsider can access using www-data he still can read or write,right?

so what's the point on setting up users and group as www-data ? Is there security reason for this ? I think if file / folder is set as user other than www-data then the owner permission can be useful.

Today after upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04, I found baloo_file_extractor consuming too much RAM and causing my laptop to slow down. I can temporarily fix this by running balooctl disable. I did a little googling and found out that it related to KDE which is weird I am using GNOME.

So is it safe to disable it or remove it altogether? If not, is there a way to make it not consume too much RAM?

I am wondering if it is possible to create link to serve a website ?

I know that we can use :

but is it possible to use something like:

server_name 123.123.123.123/test;
...
root /var/www/test;

I have a problem when trying removing a file with name something like -h_some_file_name, this is because of generated script that I made and forget to check the prefix.

If I run the command rm '-h_some_file_name' it return an error rm: invalid option -- 'h'.

If I try to change the name and then remove it using mv '-h_some_file_name' new_filename it return mv: invalid option -- 'h'

Question: How to remove a file with name like -h_some_file_name in shell? if using gui I can right click and move to trash, but in shell only returns an error

I have server with multiple websites, and each website has their own user. Each time I want to do some modification to particular website I do su username and go to the folder for that website.

the problem is each time I do su username it show this error :

mkdir: cannot create directory `/root': Permission denied

this is very strange, why command su username want to create a folder in /root? is there a way to fix this?

when i check who using the server with command who it show :

I have an ubuntu server and i need to know a list services and application that autostart in ubuntu server, is there a way to do this ?

till today I do it manually by checking in htop after I restarted the server and take note application that is starting, I know this seems dumb, I hope there is a better way to do this.

Is there a way to give the root user a temporary password? That is, after a certain time, or after it is manually deactivated, the password will be deleted.

I want to give my colleague permission to access a server as root for a certain amount of time (like a day) so he can use ssh [email protected]. After that, the password I give him will expire, and attempts to use it to log in will be rejected.

Is there a way to do this?

i upgraded my computer from 13.10 to 14.04, now my screen goes black after booting, but i can access tty1.

after a little experimenting, i tried using start x it gave me this error (from /var/log/Xorg.0.log).

i have tried :

• Can't install ATI proprietary drivers in 12.10
• What is the correct way to install proprietary ATI Catalyst Video Drivers (fglrx) directly from AMD?
• ATI Driver issue, fglrxinfo returning null display error, Xorg.conf file looks funky
• My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it?

also fglrxinfo gave me this Error: unable to open display (null)

and all of them still gave me the same result, what option left that i have ? what should i do and is there a step that i miss ?

this might be a newbies question, i have a lot of image files with different extension (*.jpg, *.png) and i want to convert it to cbr file format.

Is there a way to achieve this or are there command to do this ? (preferably using terminal)

Could someone explain to me the difference between > and >> when using shell commands?

Example:

ps -aux > log
ps -aux >> log

It seems the result is the same either way.

how to install curl in ubuntu 13.04? it always throw this error :

when using sudo apt-get update, it shows:

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

here are the steps i had done :

1. using sudo apt-get install curl
2. removing google-chrome-stable and chromium browser then sudo apt-get install curl
3. use sudo apt-get autoremove && sudo apt-get autoclean && sudo apt-get clean then run the 1st step again.

also i have tried : How do I resolve unmet dependencies after adding a PPA?

and still throw the same error. at this point i dont know what i did wrong, is curl impossible to install in ubuntu ?

I tried to get synergy working, here is the step that I have done:

1. Installing quick synergy in Ubuntu
2. Installing synergykm in mac os x
3. Using IP address instead of hostname
4. Using synergyc / synergys

The problem is, it keep giving connection timed out, and when I checked using telnet from Ubuntu myMacIpAddress 24800, It said that connection refused.

When I tried from Mac OS X telnet myUbuntuIpAddress 24800, it said that connection is timed out, does anybody know how to solve this?
