I tried adding a lot of PPA's in my newly installed Ubuntu 18.04.1 (LTS)

PPA for Adapta

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tista/adapta

PPA for Macbuntu

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/macbuntu

and I waited for a long time and then I got this output

I've tried Rebooting and I've tried reinstalling the complete operating system. I've tried to add more than 10 PPA's

I've been using mkvmerge to merge a video file and subtitles, I'm using the following command

mkvmerge -o output.mkv video.mp4 subtitles.srt

Which is working fine but as you can probably guess this is really slow operation

• I've to open terminal in every one of those directories where movies are stored.
• Then I've to copy and paste the names of the files in the command
• Then I've to rename the output file
• Then delete the original files which I used

This is a lengthy process.

Ideal situation that I want.

• I'll go into the folder which contains a movie file and a subtitle file with the same name.
• I select a movie file and and a subtitles file, right click and run a nautilus script on them.
• They get merged
• Original file gets deleted.
• Rename the merged file with the name of the orignal file with mkv extension

This doesn't need to be recursive, I don't want my HDD creating and deleting 100's of files at ones. Movie files and Subtitle files generally have the same name but some times have "_en" post fixed to subtitle files. If you have another approach of doing it I'm on board with that too.

I've setup a Nautilus Script. I've put the script in /home/sumeet/.local/share/nautilus/scripts and it does appear in right click menu. and also works as expected. I just want to assign a shortcut to the script.

How can I create keyboard shortcuts for my nautilus scripts?

Answers given in the question above target a specific release and are completely outdated, and I couldn't find anything other than this question concerning this topic.

I want to resize multiple images that are stored in multiple sub folders in a directory. And I want to replace those images with resized ones by deleting the original ones

Why?

I’ve folder icons for a lot of content in a separate partition. Some of these images are around a megabyte and are 500x500 which is in my opinion overkill for folder icons on 1080p display and I think it’s also reducing performance of nautilus and taking up some valuable space

How is the folder structure?

• Images are generally .png but also .icns, .ico
• Images can be stored in really deep directories
• all the images have 1:1 aspect ratio
• all the images are named .folder.extension
• There is an answer here but I think it only works on one image

I'm using this package called tree to list sub directories and files in a given directory. It works fine except it doesn't list hidden files.

When I run tree in a folder it returns

But it should've returned hidden files named .folder.png in each one of these folders.

Can I make it happen?

To clarify, when I click an icon in plank it opens a window of the respective app. If I click that icon again it gets minimized like it should. But when I do the same with Nautilus it opens up a new window with new session of the application. I don't want that to happen and I remember that it wasn't always like this.

When I open it through Gnome dash (on the right) it doesn't show this behavior. The problem is only in Plank.

Ubuntu Gnome 17.04

I've a lot of partitions named loop they're likely created by a snap app called Anbox, I could care less about lopp0 to loop4 but the partition named loop5 which is mounted at /media/sumeet/disk appears in nautilus

How can I hide loop5 from being visible in nautilus?

I need a feature in Ubuntu whereby if I start an application and pin it then the user won't be able to do anything other than using that particular application, unless they press a predefined combination of keys (and enter password in a popup dialog if possible)

Useful scenarios

• Kids play games or paint or write their names in LibreOffice Writer but while doing so they mess up icons in launcher or accidentally shut down the computer when something important was running in the background.
• If I let someone use my laptop for a little bit of Facebook I don't want them to check my personal local photos; I'd just pin Chrome for them.

Android has had this feature for 3 years now, and Chrome has something similar called Kiosk mode but it's just for the browser.

Android's implementation makes me believe that it's achievable. I'm flexible on the implementation and functioning and open to alternative approaches to achieve this. I'd prefer not to use terminal every time but I'm okay with using it (terminal) for a one time setup. And again I'm flexible if it works

Can I make nautilus show thumbnails of book covers for files in .epub format?

It shows thumbnails for pdf files but not .epub. Is this achievable by adding a thumbnailer?

Each of these .epub files has a cover.jpeg file inside it.

It stopped working while I was doing this process described by Jacob Vlijm, But after that I've gone through multiple fresh installs but It never worked, the only thing that seems to be different now is I'm running 17.04 but I distinctly remember it working on 16.10 and then failing on fresh installs of 16.10

What are DPDDC-B/C i2c devices?

Ultimately I'm trying to achieve this but ddccontrol needs to work for that

scaling option in Gnome tweak tools works on whole interface, I'm not looking for that, I'm looking to do the same but just for one Application (or let's say selection of applications)

Is it even possible?

I've used it before in 16.10 but I'm unable to find it for 17.04

I want to list (and save) Md5 check sum of all the files in a directory and save that list in a text file called md5sum.txt

• Integrate it within tree command (which creates a tree structure of folders and files)
• Make it work on Folders and Sub folders (this is sort of important)

When I installed Ubuntu Gnome 17.04 thumbnails for .mkv were not showing up at all, Then it automatically got fixed, now it's generating the Thumbnails but as weird as it may sound, they're all green (or purple or pink but they are all monochromatic for sure). files are not affected by this only the thumbnails. other video file formats are okay as well, .mp4 .flv, just the .mkv's are affected.

I've no idea where should I start to fix this.

Question

How frequently does the Ubuntu Gnome ISO get updated to include the latest available security patches and other bug fixes? And how can I find out that the ISO has been updated? Or does it remain the same for its lifetime (that would be 9 months I guess) with all updates being provided OTA (over the air) only?

Wayland is the default display server for Ubuntu 17.10 "on supported systems". But how can I tell if my platform is supported and I'm actually using Wayland?

I know it's a relatively new and unstable application but I figured if anyone has suffered through the issue and solved it then they can help me

The Problem

It was a bootable Ubuntu USB drive at first I tried to format it using Nautilus it didn't work, then i simply deleted the partition using Gparted and created a new FAT32 partition. but when I tried to copy anything to the USB drive it gave me this error. I'm the owner of the location, technically I should be able to write to it.

What I've tried so far

1. Tried formatting the partition to NTFS, it gave me the same error

2. Tried formatting the partition to EXT4, root took the ownership of the location, I got the ownership back by running

   chown -R user:user PATH
   

   it did work, I became the owner but the error was still there.

3. Tried formatting using Disk app, formatting was successful but I still can't write.

4. Since it's a USB OTG drive, I tried connecting it to my Phone (Nexus 5) and strangely I can write to it from my phone (using ES file Explorer), written files are visible in Nautilus but i still can't write new data to it using Nautilus

5. I don't have windows installed so I can't format it from there.

UPDATE (I've written this section in little bit of rush, if it needs further explanation, please ask)

I tried running this command as suggested in the answer

sudo dd if="/dev/zero" of="/dev/sdc1"
sudo reboot

which took forever, and after reboot my USB drive wasn't mounted I tried to mount it at /mnt/sdc1 by running

sudo mount -o rw,users,umask=000 /dev/sdc1 /mnt/sdc1

which gave me this output
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc1,
   missing codepage or helper program, or other error

   In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail or so.

when I last formatted it I clearly remember it being ext4 partition on the USB drive, so i ran this command to fix that I've used this command before on same issue on my /dev/sdbn partitions

 sudo e2fsck -f -b 32768 -y /dev/sdc1

now it says

e2fsck 1.43.3 (04-Sep-2016)
e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdc1

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a valid ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem.  If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
or
e2fsck -b 32768 <device>

Is their a way that I can know that my partition (USB drive) was actually Ext4?

after all this sudo lsblk -f isn't showing any partition type on my drive

How to set the first picture of every folder as its folder icon?

The question linked above has an answer consisting a script which has been working for me. It just needs a little improvement.

What does it do?

It finds files with .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif, .icns, .ico extensions and sets them as the folder icon of the folder in which the file was found. It works on multiple folders, recursively. Basically it tries to find an image file inside the folder, and the first image that it finds is set as a folder icon. It works great for many scenarios, and setting up this script is usually the first thing I do after fresh install (because it's amazing).

What's the problem?

There might be a few directories which contain a of lot of image files and the first image file in that directory might not be well suited to being the folder icon.

What should it do?

Instead of being extension based, if it became filename based and targeted one (for example, folder.png) or multiple (eg albumart.png cover.png) filenames then this problem could be solved.

or better yet make both approaches work in a single script

• Find predefined filenames
• If found set it as folder icon and move to next folder
• If NOT found then find predefined extension and set it as folder icon and move to next folder

I can control the brightness of my DELL S2216H connected with HDMI via the command:

ddccontrol -p -r 0x10 -w 53

where in this example the number 53 represents the brightness level (range 0 to 100). But I don't know how to link the command to my brightness keys on my keyboard or add laptop like slider next to volume control in Gnome-panel

while searching on the topic, i read this question Control external monitor brightness via software but the accepted answer to that question doesn't solve my issue
