When I go to save stuff, a dropdown appears that I want to disable. I never use the dropdown and it gets in the way of functional use by requiring additional clicks to get rid of it.
How can I disable it so it never appears? In GNOME privacy settings I have file history disabled but this doesn't help solve the problem.

I disabled Trackpad/Touchpad and Trackpoint in the BIOS forcing me to have to use a mouse but it got ride of irq/118-ELAN067 hogging the CPU. But irq/61-WACF2200 still remains a cpu hog.
Using a Thinkpad X13 Yoga Gen 2 with Ubuntu 20.04 fully up to date. X13 Yoga Gen 2 has given me nothing but problems.
I put my laptop to sleep. When I came back my ethernet network interface is just gone. No internet so I had to use wifi to post this.

Ethernet is just GONE. This happens from time to time. If I reboot, ethernet is back. But the interface name (e.g., enx806d97218e00) changes at every boot. It is a PAIN that the interface name does not stay the same across boots!!!!
Is there any way to get the interface up without doing a reboot?
Is there a way to restore single finger function on touchpad without having to reboot?
After using touchpad for a while it often starts requiring 2 fingers on the touchpad to move the cursor and actions that would require 2 fingers then start requiring 3. Single finger is ignored entirely.
My touchpad driver appears to be: ELAN0674:00 04F3:3193 Touchpad
but executing the following does NOT correct the issue:
xinput disable "ELAN0674:00 04F3:3193 Touchpad" && xinput enable "ELAN0674:00 04F3:3193 Touchpad"
Rebooting always corrects the issue.
I'm using Nautilus 3.38.2.
When saving a file to a folder causing the save dialogue to open, it often results in a drop-down appearing with suggestions for I assume what to name the file. This is SOOO annoying.
I hate auto-suggestions and auto-correct things in general and never find them useful. They create time-delays and impede efficient work.
Is there a setting to disable this annoyance? This annoyance was not present on previous version of nautilus.
Using Ubuntu 21.04 with pure Gnome Shell 3.38.
Consider this example scenario: I have 2 workspaces open, workspace-1 and workspace-2. In workspace-2, the Gedit app is open. In workspace-1, the Gedit app is not open.
While in workspace-1, I enter Nautilus app and double-click on a saved Gedit text file. Gedit opens the file but auto-moves to workspace-2 to present the opened file. WTHeck! Why isn't it opening Gedit in the workspace I am in? What is the point of workspaces if you can't create the stuff you want to work with in that workspace?
I don't understand the --object-path option in the udisksctl command
I want to unmount an USB thumb drive, but I don't want to have to lookup it's device name (for example /dev/sdb) at each mount. The device name can change across mounts. I want a static way to identify the drive, for example by its partition name or UUID. Does the --object-path service this function?
How do I identify what the --object-path is of a USB thumb drive so I can execute a command such as the following with a partition name that is static across mountings: udisksctl unmount --object-path /media/greg/FD-ext4

I use the above script to make backups to a thumb-drive (flash drive). As you can see, I use umount at the end. Doing this however does not result in the "eject button" symbol disappearing in Nautilus, so I don't know with 100% certainty that the drive has been unmounted (based on visual inspection in Nautilus) before pulling the thumb-drive.
Is there a command that will unmount and power-off the drive, removing the "eject button" symbol within Nautilus so I have visual confirmation that the drive is unmounted and that there is no possible way that damage could occur to the data when i pull the thumb-drive?
I bought a Logitech C930e Webcam cause I needed to have a way to use Zoom for school. The Webcam connects to my desktop computer running latest version of Ubuntu 20.04 with a USB Type A plug.
This webcam gives me a lot of trouble. With the webcam plugged into the USB port, I boot Ubuntu, then login into my Ubuntu user account and the webcam starts blinking white light and the desktop screen freezes. To fix this freeze I have to unplug the webcam USB connection. Then Ubuntu immediately unfreezes and works normally.
To get Zoom with video, I plug the webcam back in, open Zoom, try to connect, and when I try to enable video, the computer sometimes freezes again. I unplug the USB, plug it back in. I have to keep going through this routine a few times on some days until I finally can get everything to work normally. Then after class I shutdown and when I have to boot again, the issues start all over again.
Is there some driver I can download or something that will make this webcam work trouble-free? I have all the "proprietary" repos enabled on my Ubuntu so I'm open to any driver that will fix this. Or maybe there is some other fix I can do?
My goal is to be able to keep the webcam USB cable plugged into my desktop computer and be able to boot, login, and just have it work without having to unplug it then plug it back in, etc. Is this goal unrealistic to have?
Using Ubuntu 20.04. I have my default "sudo" account. I created a 2nd user account (Standard account). While logged into the 2nd user account, if I insert a USB Flash Drive formated with ext4, then I get this message when trying to access files on the drive: This location could not be displayed. You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "USB Flash Drive"
I have "solved" the problem by using a different USB Flash Drive formatted with FAT32. But to further my learning, I thought I would post here to see if anyone knows how to fix the problem if I were to continue to use an ext4 formatted drive. I'm assuming the fix somehow involves changing permissions, but I'm not sure what permissions.
And I realize that this subject has other similar posts on Ask Ubuntu and I have tried to analyze those fixes but I'm having trouble understanding how to relate those fixes to dealing with the permissions for a non-user detachable device like a Flash Drive.
I have my Thinkpad laptop configured to charge up to 80% cause I mostly use it on AC. On the occasional use where I am taking it off AC, is there a command that basically tells tlp to charge the battery to 100% and once 100% is reached, return charging behavior to the 80% configuration?
I see there is command sudo tlp fullcharge [ BAT0 | BAT1 ], but this command requires a reboot before the "80%" configuration is restored. Is there a command to restore the "80%" configuration without having to reboot?
Here's a problem I have: I step away from my laptop, a notification/message arrives (e.g., an email), Gnome Screensaver activates (i.e., the clock screen), I return to my computer and swipe the touchpad to show the screensaver/clock screen in order to see if any notifications are present but none are displayed on the screensaver/clock screen because the email message arrived before the screensaver activated.
This problem could be solved if I could engage the screensaver/clock screen before stepping away from my computer. I can do this if I lock the screen, but I don't wan't to lock the screen and force me to have to enter a password on return.
Is there any way to manually engage the screensaver/clock screen (preferably by keyboard shortcut) without locking the screen?

I confirmed both versions of Firefox are exactly the same and have the same theme and no extensions. Is this difference a result of some about:config setting or something? I would like for the Laptop version to NOT have a titlebar.
In Ubuntu 16.04 settings, you can go to Appearance > Colors & Gradients > and select a 'plain' color to be the Desktop background. I like the color choices of 16.04 and want to use the same color on Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop background but 18.04 doesn't offer the same color.
Is there a way to save a .png of Ubuntu Desktop color background on 16.04 so I can have a .png of that color for use on 18.04?
In Ubuntu 18.04 I would like to create a new (custom) locale. Is this possible? There seem to be many older entries on how to do this but nothing current (none of the 'old' ways are working for me).
I would like to make a copy of en_US.utf8 and change the LC_TIME section to read like this

1) How should I name this new file I am creating? Does the name need to be in a specific format to be accepted? For example, is 'en_XX' acceptable? How about 'en_US@DK'?

Gnome Disks makes users select "Custom" sometimes and type in what partition they want. If I do this to try to create an unformatted partition it says "Unknown" afterwards and also produces an error dialog.
What is the method to create an unformatted partition using Gnome disks?
Prior to updating to Ubuntu 17.04, opening new text documents always opened them in a new tab. But since updating, new text documents are always opening in a new window (even when a gedit window is already open). This is resulting in tons of windows being open which is terrible.
I have gsettings set at default (auto) for tab mode.
How do I make Gedit always open documents in a TAB?
In the past, I have always set umask at ~/.profile. I set a umask of 077 so my documents get a permission of 600 (rw-------). But setting this at ~/.profile no longer works in Ubuntu 17.04.
So as new documents get created in a gnome session on Ubuntu 17.04, where can I configure so that they get created with permission 600?
I am trying to create a new system locale. I have studied the directions at Unix Stackexchange and at Ask Ubuntu but my attempts to get my environment variable into /etc/locale.gen have been unsuccessful.
I have created my environment variable according to Sourceware and copied it into /usr/share/i18n/locales. (All I'm really doing is using en_US and changing the LC_TIME variable to use en_DK, so I copied the LC_TIME portion of en_DK into en_US and I am trying to make this into a new variable so that is lasts through updates. Changing the LC_TIME portion within the en_US file is not working because updates often reset it back to its original state).
Let's call my new variable en_US@XX. After I copied my variable, running ls /usr/share/i18n/locales shows my new variable in the listing.
Now I run sudo localedef -i en_US@XX --quiet -f UTF-8 [email protected] and nothing is reported by bash leading me to believe everything was successfully done. But when I cat /etc/locale.gen | less my variable is not present. I have also tried command sudo localedef -i en_US@XX -c -f UTF-8 [email protected] but this doesn't work either.
If I can just get my variable into /etc/locale.gen, then I can run sudo locale-gen and I should be good.
So how do I get my variable to appear in /etc/locale.gen? Am I misunderstanding what localedef is supposed to be doing? Don't I need to get my variable into /etc/locale.gen to be able to generate it for system use?
