I don't know why I just noticed this, it should have been obvious earlier. When I copy files from my desktop or virtual machine to my server via file manager the original file date is not preserved. The server shows the date and time of the copy.

I have googled some and I see that I could do it via command line but that would not be very convenient when I am copying groups of files. Is there a file manager that maintains the original date when dragging and dropping to network folders?

Also, I am asking about date but I may be meaning timestamp - don't want to confuse things by vague terminology.

I have looked at many posts and have not found an answer that seems applicable to my problem. I seldom power off my desktop, I usually just put it to sleep so when I log back in it's the same state I left it.

I have another computer that I use as a file server that has sftp shares setup. Whenever I take the desktop computer out of sleep, the files are not available unless I first access them via the file manager. So an app like my media player will not find the library until I open the folder.

Is this an auto mount situation? The shares seem to be mounted, just not accessible until "woken up" again. How can I resolve this issue? I believe it is an issue with SFTP since I was not having this problem when my previous server used Samba shares.

PS I am the only user and the user name and passwords are the same on both machines

I haven't received an update notice for Chromium browser lately. My version is 97.0.4692 and what little info I could find says there is a version 98.0.4758.81. Should I find a way to update to most recent version or stick with the repo version?

Something happened to my Cinnamon desktop. I no longer have the task bar or panel launcher functioning properly and now I have a group window instead.

If I add a Panel Launcher from 'Add Applets to Panel', I get a small panel next to the system tray with Firefox, a terminal and file manager icons. If I select 'add to panel' from the Main menu, no icons get added to that panel but they do seem to get added to group window. However, I can only see them if I reload Cinnamon. Programs not in the group window show up on the task bar with title when started but items in the group window sometimes enlarge with the title when activated, sometimes not. If I remove the group window and activate it again, it's empty.

I have re-installed Cinnamon (apt install --re-install, I did not try to remove Cinnamon) and have reset to default several times, but still have the same problems.

I have Cinnamon 4.2.4 on Ubuntu 18.04, seems like the problems started after an update that involved x11 but not sure,previous to that everything was working fine.

I occasionally get a burst of hard drive activity that lasts for 10-20 secs and then stops. I have seen some posts suggesting some sort of indexing might be going on but I don't know how to investigate this.

The problem usually - but not always - happens on coming out of sleep. There is brief period of intense activity and then it stops. It is on a system that has not changed much over the last 4-5 years and has just started recently, maybe the last 4-6 months.

Just installed fatrace but that seems to be only realtime, what I need is history with time stamps so I can see what accessed the disk at a certain time.

I thought I had solved this before but can't remember what I did.

I use Qpdfview for my PDF viewer. The Save As/ Open dialogue does not have any bookmarks or places like the default file manager (NEMO). I have Nemo and PCManFM installed and am using Cinnamon desktop on an Lubuntu 16.04 install.

So - is there a way to change the file mangager on the left (default program FM) so that it functions like the one on the right? (Nemo or PCManFM) (see screenshot)

I have asked before and am still trying to find a decent accounting program for Linux/Ubuntu. Not a checkbook program but something for small business accounting. I need to generate year end tax reports and things like a P&L

I have been struggling with Gnucash for years. The program is generally OK but the transactions importer is a nightmare. It adds hours of work to balancing accounts, due to things like mis-categorized transactions, transactions not being imported, and erasing already cleared transactions. And support is difficult to get, the mailing list is only occasionally helpful.

I have searched multiple times and the list of software only reflects Checkbook programs. I am looking for an alternative, not cloud based. If someone has a suggestion of ANY kind, I would appreciate it.

Small issue but curious. I have one mp3 file that changes type to binary when I copy it. If I force it to open with an mp3 player it will play but if I double click it to play it won't play - it opens in an editor.

It's just one file and the only one that does it.

Sorry, I have to revisit this. All the methods recommended have not worked for me. I am unsure where my error is after multiple attempts.

I have a Griffin Powemate that I use as an external volume control (don't judge me). I want it to work after resuming from Standby/ Sleep. As it is now, I have to run a script from the command line to get it to to re-start. I am using Ubuntu 16.04 with Cinnamon Desktop

The Powermate will activate and control volume if I run any of these commands from the command line - if the machine is in sleep/standby

If I re-power the machine, it only works if I run "pmlogin.sh"

/dev/powermate is a link to /dev/input/event12 - the input from the Griffin Powermate.

The "/usr/local/bin/powermate" script is from the instructions I found to make it work. The pmlogin.sh was written by me because I had problems with the original script running after resume due to the existence of the /tmp/.evrouter:0 file.

I have followed every instruction that I could find, none of the methods have worked for me so far. Could someone please tell me what I am doing wrong or what will work? Just an FYI, I am not a total noob, I currently run/ maintain about 5 different Ubuntu installations and have been able to solve any problem I have had. This one I cannot resolve.

I have performed numerous searches looking for accounting software for Linux (I am running Ubuntu) and haven't found any good solutions. Maybe I am glossing over something?

I have been using GnuCash for years after dropping Moneydance. I don't remember exactly why I stopped using it, probably for reasons similar to my wanting to get away from GnuCash. Plus, it isn't open-source and I didn't want to buy a product that I hadn't been satisfied with in the first place.

The problems I have with GnuCash are the constant errors I have in reconciliation. Every statement is a wrestling match of importing data, matching data, transactions not being imported, account totals changing after a reconciliation, math errors and on and on. Plus, I have tried to find support but there is little to be had; I have tried to get on the mailing list a couple of times with no success.

I am a sole proprietor of a business and own property so I have multiple accounts to handle. I need accounting software mostly for year-end P&L statements for income tax preparation for my accountant.

If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear about them. GnuCash has pretty much worn me out, so I need to find something else.

I have created a couple of new users via the Users and Groups GUI for Ubuntu 16.04, however they are not available on the log in screen (nor log out/ switch user).

I used the same method on a virtual machine (as a test) and it worked. I have googled and found no questions similar to mine so I have no idea where to go next.

I have not tried to create a user via the CLI.

Any suggestions as to why I cannot log in via the new user?

I wrote this script: pmlogin.sh:

I wrote this because for some reason, each time I run powermate I need to remove the tmp file.

Everything works fine but if after I have put my computer into suspend mode, when I unlock the screen powermate isn't working and I have to re-run the script.

My question: Why do I have to re-run it? Is there something I can change to make it persistent?

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 with Cinnamon Desktop.

I am trying to install Lollypop on a new Linux install 16.04 LTS. When I run

sudo apt-get install lollypop

I get the error 'file not found'. (Yes, I added the repo)

I found a deb package online and installed that but Lollypop would run for a second then close.

Can't find any info on this problem after looking for a couple of hours. Any ideas?

The original info I used to install Lollypop I found here. I found the Xenial package here and installed using GDebi.

I had not really been aware of this program (Boot Repair) until recently, only now because it seems to be updating almost daily.

Do I need this? Why the constant updates?
