I have to run some programs on a shared workstation with x2go.

These programs take quite some time and I wish to:

1. Start the program within x2go
2. Log out
3. Connect again after some time to the machine with x2go and see the results of the program

So, in the end, what I would like to do is similar to what one can do with screen. However, it seems that logging out kills all the programs running.

The programs use Mathematica and in particular some of its dynamic built-in functions, so I need access to the X-server in order to interact with the GUI and screen is not an option.

If needed, both my computer and the workstation use Ubuntu. The command cat /etc/os-release give:

I have to cut a long file (approx. 2 millions of lines) at the line that follows the line at which there is the last appearance of a word.

For example the file could be:

line 1
line 2 
....
word
line n
word
line n+2

This file should be cut at the second appearance of word, so the lines following line n+2 (and that line too) should be dropped.

The problem is that I do not know in advance the number of times word appears in the file.

I have installed the drivers for a scanner, but Ubuntu complained that there were missing packages and to solve this problem I used to command

sudo apt --fix-broken install

but now Ubuntu wants to remove some packages I need like dropbox and chrome:

How do I fix the broken install without removing the packages I need?

EDIT I use version 20.04 LTS.

The drivers I have installed are for the scanner and printer MFC-7360N. The instruction I followed came from the official site of the Brother company: here.

I am planning to upgrade the computer RAM: will I have to reinstall Ubuntu? I am asking this question because of the swap partition: if I double the RAM do I have to double the swap partition too?

I am trying to print a file but the printer does not work in the dialog that opens when printing it says the printer is in pause, and nothing happens.

I am trying to install apr-util so I can install CACTUS. Yesterday I could not run make because it didn't find some xml files. I installed the libexpat1-dev and the make ran without problems.

What do I do?

When I frist installed Ubuntu on my laptop, I had this problem (the computer hangs and never shuts down) which I solved installing the NVIDIA drivers. This happened both with 16.04LTS and 18.04LTS, in fact with the latter I could do nothing since the computer frezed even before I could do something (and that's why I ended up installing the 16.04LTS). So I was wondering:

If I upgrade to 1804LTS will I experience the same problems again?

I am trying to use the university printer (it is an HP-Laser Jet-600-M602) to print my document. It worked well until yesterday, now it says "Filter Failed".

I tried to follow what is reccommended on this site, but I cannot access localhost:631: it requires credentials that apparently I do not have.

I have never installed HP proprietary drivers: Ubuntu did all by itself when I asked to search for network printers.

I am using Ubuntu 16.04.

I am trying to use aspell to spell check a PDF file; I run the command:

aspell -c file.pdf

but I get the error:

Errore: No word lists can be found for the language "it_IT".

My file is written in english: how can I tell this to aspell?

I have to fill in some pdf form in a website. The Firefox pdf reader cannot fill in form, it is just a reader. How can I fill in forms in Firefox?

I am trying to install Mathematica 10 on Ubuntu 16.04. In my folder I had a .sh file, so I used chmod +x and ran it.

During the installation it asks to choose a folder for the installation, but whaterver I type it says:

Error: Cannot create directory /usr/local/Wolfram/Mathematica/10.0.

You may need to be logged in as root to continue with this installation.

What do I do?

Lately my Ubuntu 16.04 has been asking me to upgrade to a newer version. I wonder: if I upgrade what is going to happen to my data and to the programs I have installed?

Is it possible to electronically sign a document (I mean sign it without printing and scanning the whole file) under Ubuntu 16.04? And how do I install it?

EDIT To be clear I want to electronically sign my document not digitally: I want to put my actual signature on the document witout having to print and scannign it

I have a C++ program that does what it is supposed to do, but there must be some problem with pointer, since it crashes at the end and creates a core dump. My problem is that I cannot find the core file, so I cannot debug it.

I have tried

ulimit -c unlimited
ulimit -a

and now the dimension of the file is set to unlimited, but still I cannot find the core. I have tried in every folder written here but still it seems that no core file is created.

Where can I find it?
