I recently updated my NVIDIA graphics card driver. After install & reboot everything seems to load fine till login. However, when I log in, the signal to my monitor is lost despite the computer tower remaining on.

When I attempt to switch to TTY3 at the login screen using Ctr+Alt+F3, the same thing happens.

When I attempt to use recovery mode from the GRUB menu I get hung on a flashing purple screen.

Are there any other things I can try in order to change my NVIDIA driver, despite the fact that my computer is in this troubled state?

My Ubuntu 18.04 desktop hangs on me ~1x per day. This happens when I am in the middle of web browsing or using a desktop application, not when booting. When it does, the mouse pointer will still move freely, but clicking or keystrokes have no effect on my system until I do a hard reboot.

How can I stop this from happening?

Note, I had a similar issue with my 16.04 install: Ubuntu desktop hangs occasionally during regular use

I created some icons on my launcher using Google Chrome's "Add to desktop" tool. I would like to change the icon however.

Where are the corresponding .desktop files that represent my Google Chrome apps?

From there I imagine I can use the following instructions to change the icon: How to : Change an icon in 16.04

Upon reboot I am sent to a BusyBox shell with an error message:

ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/66301ae5-dd52-4e24-8345-e216cba1d1ea does not exist.

Perhaps relevant:

• I did recently format a large data storage drive on my machine, but it was not where system files are stored.
• My harddrive was encrypted.

Any advice about what is happening and what I could do to fix it?

I put a decent amount of work into installing a suite of data science related applications such as ipython, spyder, numpy and scikit-learn using apt-get and pip. Then I was directed to Anaconda which offers a bash script to install them all.

Question: If install Anaconda (https://www.continuum.io/downloads) on top of the things I already installed am I likely to run into conflicts? Should I put in the work to uninstall existing versions first? (I'm not eager to do this, because if I run into issues with Anaconda I'll have to do it all over again.)

Any advice much appreciated!

I run sudo pip install rpy2 and I get the following error output.

I did the best I could to install all relevant dependencies. Here are my versions:

I have added a user to a group.

Then I have recursively changed the group of a directory:

sudo chgrp -R perma /localdata/harvard-OCR

And yet my user still cannot access this directory

I have become unable to install anything on my Ubuntu 14.04 box. When I try to, I get the following error:

I get similar errors when I try any one of the following commands:

sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install python-sqlalchemy
sudo apt-get install vlc browser-plugin-vlc

Any ideas why and/or how to fix?

I'm working locally on an Ubuntu 14.04 machine and I often need to access an Ubuntu 12.04 server. I would like to mount my home drive on the server as a directory on my local machine. It is important that I can access this directory via terminal. How can I do this?

Currently I can type ssh wbp and access my server. I can also graphically open Files > Connect to server and conect via sftp. However… this doesn't seem to mount any kind of directory that I can access via terminal (or my pycharm project browser).

I installed a program "Gliffy" as a Google Chrome app. It saves it's diagrams as *.gliffy files. I'm wondering if I could set things up so that I can double click on this *.gliffy file and it opens up in the Gliffy editor.

EDIT: I'm using Ubuntu 14.04

I attempted to install The Lightning plugin for Thunderbird. I do this by going to Tools -> Add-ons. I search for Lightning and click "Add to Thunderbird". Then I get a popup asking me if I want to open or save this .xpi file. If I click open, then Thunderbird opens a new email address with the .xpi file attached. If I click save, then try to double click it, it again opens as an email in Thunderbird. How do I install this dang thing?!

I attached two screenshots for clarification.

I have two very similar .desktop launcher files that are to be used as internet shortcuts. When I double click on one file it opens properly in a webbrowser as I would like. When I double click on the other, it opens in a text editor which I do NOT like. How do I change this?

I mount several drives on my machine.

Almost without fail, after a couple hours and/or after my machine has gone idle, these drives become inaccessable. Any command I issue that references these drives (such as ls) hangs for several minutes and Ctr-C does nothing to stop the hang. The only way I've found to fix it is to restart my machine.

I notice when I look in my CIFS file several messages like this which I think may be related:

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04. Previously I used Ubuntu 10.04 and did not have the same problem accessing these drives.

Also I'm using mount.cifs version: 5.1

I have mounted a share on my Ubuntu machine. I am unable to checkout a subversion working copy onto this share. When I try to do so, I get an error message:

svn: E200033: database is locked, executing statement 'CREATE TABLE REPOSITORY...

However,
1) I am able to check out the same repository in a local directory.
2) My colleague on a mac is able to check the repository to the shared directory.

Here are my specs:
Ubuntu 12.04
svn 1.7.5
mount.cifs version: 5.1

The code in .bashrc does not execute when I open a new terminal window in Ubuntu 12.04. I noticed this when creating a .bash_aliases file. The aliases did not show up when I opened a new terminal. However when I type source .bashrc the aliases did show up.

.bashrc should be run everytime I open a new terminal window right?

How do I make this happen?
