I'm shopping for a USB-C ethernet adapter compatible with all OS. Is there a way to verify it will work for lubuntu or ubuntu prior to purchase?

Techkey's description says "Supported Operating Systems: Windows XP and above(32/64-bit), Mac OS X10.6 and above", but does not mention the linux kernel. (A different search result explicitly stated manual installation would be required for linux 4.8 and prior, alerting me to potential incompatibility.)

Flujo's description says "OTG device, Used with no external drivers or power required."

So is Flujo's more likely to work than Techkey's? What do you look for?

I followed the instructions to install the driver for BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN [14e4:4311] (rev 01), firmware-b43-installer. However, now my wireless module (should I call it that?) is displaying twice in my taskbar. What caused this taskbar issue? How do I fix it?

Dell released the A10 BIOS 19 May 2008 and updated it 21 June 2013.

This date does not match Dell's. man dmidecode does state, "[Because it does not] probe for the actual hardware[,] the presented information [is] possibly unreliable." Does this date indicate when the BIOS was last updated, demonstrating mine is outdated? or only the release date itself, implying nothing about when mine was last updated?

How do I copy an audio CD to my Android 8.1.0 cellphone using Lubuntu 18.10?

I'm trying to copy CD tracks to my computer to put on my Android cellphone in lubuntu 18.10 i386 using default software. I couldn't figure out VLC (which wasn't properly playing the CD) so I opened K3b (first time using this, too).

I go into settings and it says "Unable to load KCDDB configuration module" in the CDDB tab. I searched Muon Package Manager for 'KCDDB' but there were no results. Searching 'K3b' shows everything installed except extra themes. How do I proceed?

The home router webpage lists connected MAC addresses. Is there a way to determine what the device is (e.g. iPad, PS3, Nintendo Switch, Windows laptop) and info about it (e.g. name input by its user) without physically accessing the device? Are there commands I can execute in QTerminal?

What must I do to type in Japanese?

I wish to use fcitx-mozc as Wakisaka recommends, but when I add 'Keyboard - Japanese' via Preferences > Fcitx Configuration, I get only a qwerty layout with Roman letter output, no Japanese formed by typing a Japanese word like 'sore'.

When I uncheck 'Only Show Current Language' and search 'Moz', there is no Mozc option.

In 'Keyboard and Mouse' via Start search > Keyboard Layout, I have "Keyboard model: Dell Latitude laptop" because this laptop is a Dell Latitude D620. I have tried adding the Keyboard layout: Japanese there, too, with Super+Space to switch, but still no Japanese output. The 'kana' variant does let me type katakana from each key, but I need to be typing in qwerty or dvorak converting hiragana to kanji or katakana.

I wonder if I have found a hint: An 18.04 user was told to edit /usr/share/ibus/component/mozc.xml, but my folder lacks this file.

(This answer from three years ago appears to have the solution I wound up implementing as described in my answer below, though I think fcitx is already installed in Lubuntu 18.10.)

The default setting is to show all open applications in the taskbar regardless of active desktop. I wish to show only the windows in the active desktop in that desktop's taskbar. How do I show only the active desktop's applications in the taskbar?

I executed the command in the Quassel documentation and in File > Networks > Configure Networks clicked 'Edit...' for irc.ubuntu.com:8001 and checked 'Use SSL' (with no proxy, nothing in the Advanced tab altered).

First I noticed that the USB I'd booted from was listed twice:

The md5sum matched the stated hash, and I checked disk for errors before starting lubuntu and no errors were found. So is this all normal for various reasons, or should I not try to install from this liveUSB?

But I don't have ibus like that other user, only fcitx and XIM. fcitx freezes lxpanel on either the first or second click. What should I do?

If I click System Tools > Fcitx and click the keyboard, my computer will freeze until I kill lxpanel, and my wifi is showing twice, as shown in the following image. I will ask how to fix Fcitx in a separate question, but for this question: How do I fix lxpanel showing wifi twice?

In macOS High Sierra's Preview I drew a rectangle on a PDF. In Lubuntu 18.04's Document Viewer, I see only the ability to add text or highlight, but the rectangle appears inaccessible as if background on the PDF.

It seems to me that Okular enables me to draw a line, but not to edit the rectangle. (I have installed it from Lubuntu's Software.)

It appears that Sylpheed, the default mail software for Lubuntu 18.04, deletes mail rather than archiving it, but I am still trying to verify that I'm not overlooking some hidden option.

What software should I use to archive mail rather than delete it? I also wish to view multiple accounts' mail together, rather than clicking mailbox by mailbox. Basically, I like macOS's Mail application, which enables users to view mail separately or collectively, and to archive or delete.

My Lubuntu setup, upgraded today from 16 to 18.04.1 LTS, has Sylpheed 3.5.1, but the Lubuntu Manual says trojita is the default.

I have noticed the Sylpheed documentation is missing graphics, which makes me think developer support is lacking. However, I do not see Trojita listed in the Lubuntu Software Center searching 'mail' in the 'Internet' category! Is it only for 18.10?

It may be worth noting that I had errors upgrading from lubuntu 16:

1. Could not install 'doc-base': installed doc-base package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10

2. at the end of the upgrade, "Could not install the upgrades": The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg -configure -a).

However, despite #2, the upgrade seemed to be successful, and fixed a splash page visual error: Before upgrading to lubuntu 18 LTS I installed upgrades to lubuntu 16 LTS after not using the laptop for about a year; it caused the 5-dots loading screen's dots graphic to remain after logging in. Restarting the computer after this supposedly-failed upgrade to 18, this problem was resolved.

Is the problem that my laptop is 32-bit and this software is 64-bit? Should I change the server to a different country? (How would I do that?)

I suspect the answer is that there is no 32-bit version available, that snap automatically takes into account my processor type, and hence there are no installation files in the 32-bit channel.
