Friends, this is a popular question without a fixed solution. Kindly assist, as work is at halt.

I dont see dual boot option and enter windows directly unless I press F12 and choose Ubuntu. I have tried to repair in many ways:

• I have tried boot-repair However, the paste bin file does not open .

On my next attempt, it tells me - GRUB is still present, please try again.

• I followed this thread - no result. I tried bootorder as well, through bios and then efibootmgr (with secure boot off). I disabled fast startup too. I also applied the bcdedit commands.

I am in hurry as my work is at halt.

Kindly note that while installing, i tried the bootloader in the Ubuntu install area (sdb5), as well as in Sda - I did multiple full re-installs.

Then the boot-repair mentioned sdb-1 as the place for it. Point is - nothing has worked.

Edit - after using Boot- Loader, I can not log into Ubuntu. I see a GRUB terminal. I have to now rely on Live USB.

There are other threads on this issue. However, they don't have clarity as to why this problem keeps repeating.

I'll define the problem.

On switching on the laptop, I am given something similar to this error, (borrowing from the user - Jordy)

Despite following the steps listed in the big thread LINK , involving the use of fsck, the problem repeats after rebooting. I am able to type this question as this one time the problem did not repeat.

As per the linked thread, this is indicative of:

1. Failing Hard Drive, as per the user - gammapoint or
2. System not shutting down properly, as per the user - farmuel Angel

The above thread is close to six years old. What is the current known reason? I understand that, anyway, backups are essential. However, if the reason for these errors is determined, one can take steps to resolve. For example:

a. do I need a new hard drive

b. do I need to check memory

c. is this a temporary issue that happens some 7 - 10 times, is resolved by fsck and doesn't appear again ...

• As per the 'Disks' program -

Disk is OK, 16 bad sectors (43° C / 109° F)

P.S: I am using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Only Ubuntu. I have one in-built hard-drive.

I use Ubuntu 16.04. As a long-time Ubuntu user, I would not like to switch to Windows for Audio Recording. Can you assist me? I am not getting optimal sound from my mic.

Scarlett Solo is an Audio Interface that does not provide drivers for Ubuntu. I have the Gen 3 Scarlett. I will now list how I have gone about connecting the Scarlett to Ubuntu. I am using the Reaper software. I hope this process will help other users like me. I was not able to find a one-stop source on the internet.

1. I connected the Scarlett and found that PulseAudio reads it. However, I learned from here to use JACK instead.

   

2. I made no changes in JACK settings.

3. In Sound options → Input, I chose Digital Input.

   

4. In Sound options → Output, I chose Headphones.

   

5. Now, I went to the popular and useful channel of Reaper Mania on YouTube and learned that I must set the Device in Reaper to - Scarlett Solo.

6. However, Reaper does not read this device. So I chose JACK as Device.

   

7. But I got this error instead:

   

8. I am able to record sound, though it does not sound to be of optimum quality. This issue mentioned here.

   Issue: Microphone recordings are distorted/contain static/are unbalanced (left channel).

9. Where do I go from here? What's the best way to get the best sound on Ubuntu? Is there a way to get the best sound without the drivers? Or do I have to go to Windows as this link implies?

I want to copy from one external hard disk to another. The content to copy is around 1 TB. Is there a way I can do this without sitting in front of the computer? The issue is that there are errors while copying and I have to click on boxes so that the transfer can continue. This prevents me from doing other things and I have to sit in front of the computer. I hope I am clear and you can help me.

Earlier, I was copying and pasting as I usually do. The errors I'd get were about Duplicate Files, and about some file not being found. I would come back to the computer to find that unless I click the 'skip' button, for example, the copying stops.

My need is to hardcode subtitles onto a video. I have tried Handbrake already which doesn't suit the purpose. Is there an alternative?

Kindly note I need a software with a front-end. I am not adept in terminal language and it takes me time. And WinFF, based on ffmpeg, does not hardcode subtitles.

I have a H1 Zoom Recorder and it functions as a USB Mic. I connect it to Ubuntu 16.04, but I am unable to find it under 'Input' tab of the 'Sounds' option.

I went on to Install pauvcontrol but I do not find the option there. I can confirm that the device (Zoom Recorder) is working well.

My intention is to use the Mic with Cheese Webcam Booth and with Audacity eventually.

I need to ensure that when I download from Ubuntu Software Centre, I do so on a self-made partition, and not in the HOME folder.

This applies only to applications and games. Is this possible?

I'd like the original colour scheme, icon style of 12.04.

I somehow lost the Ambiance theme (possible error or upgrade error). I re-installed 'light-themes' from the terminal and got it back.

But the panel on the top that shows the options of sound, battery and wi-fi has changed and I can-not get the original setting back.

In the windows, the close, minimize tools have shifted to the right instead of the original left side.

I had installed MyUnity and Ubuntu Tweak but deleted them. As such, I want the original setting back.

In Banshee, we could sort the songs by star-rating by clicking on the interface itself. This way, I could transfer my starred songs easily onto the ipod and other disks.

In RB, how do I show rating on the interface, and then sort them thus?
