I love ls colors and do not want to disable them everywhere, but the ls colors are useless on ntfs-mounted (and probably other similar file systems - like exfat) partitions, because all files there have 777 permissions. They are also distractive because directories are shown in inverse video and thus have poor contrast.
Is there a way to selectively disable colors on some partitions?
I have a fairly oldish system76 laptop and the fan does not turn on automatically any longer, so the CPU overheats and the laptop powers off all the time.
I opened it and cleaned it from dust. I also followed the instructions in How to control fan speed? and it worked. Once. I.e., I (as root) installed the lm-sensors and fancontrol packages, ran sensors-detect, had it add coretemp to /etc/modules, ran service kmod start, ran pwmconfig, then fancontrol turned the fan on - I heard the noise, I felt the hot air escape the exhaust opening, and the laptop ran as it should.
However, I rebooted, and now the fan does not turn on. I walked the path from scratch (apt purged the lm-sensors and fancontrol packages &c), but now pwmconfig fails
There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed
At this point, I just want to turn the fan on, damn the temperatures. How do I do that?

I like the way simple-scan produces small pdf files for text documents.
Alas, since I upgraded to Ubuntu 17.10 (and still on 18.04), the keys C-1 (scan 1 page) and C-n no longer work, so I have to move the mouse (which is slow), so I am looking for alternatives.
Compile pdf file from multiple images scanned in by scanimage --batch and Scanning from terminal offer an excellent approach:

Alas, the file scan.pdf is 10M - for a page which is scanned by simple-scan into a 164k PDF file.
I tried all combinations:

So, how do I scan a text document into PDF the way simple-scan does in text mode without using my mouse?
PS. I asked this on Unix and got no answers.
Time indicator is shown as "%a %H:%M" in the center of the top bar.
How do I move it back to the right where it belongs, and make it include the full date and time ("%Y-%m-%d %s %H:%M")?
simple-scan sees the USB-powered scanner (CanoScan LiDE 110) but sometimes fails to start it up.
Usually it scans the first page in several "tries", i.e., the "scanning noise" comes out in bursts, interrupted by short pauses, and then scans the page. The second and further pages are scanned in a single burst of "scanning noise".
However, sometimes, I get a very short burst of noise and then an error message. When I connect the scanner to a mac laptop, it pauses with the "warming up the scanner" message and then scans the page.
When I immediately re-connect the scanner to Ubuntu, simple-scan works just fine.
Is there a way to teach simple-scan to "try harder" when warming up the scanner?
PS. Changing cables and USB ports does not help.
SOLUTION: plug the scanner into the usb2 socket and leave it alone for a few minutes!

This is a folow-up to a previous question (Saving monitor settings?), where we learned that the configuration is saved in file ~/.config/monitors.xml.
My problem is that my configuration is usually, but not always restored. I.e., quite often I have to call the display capplet to reconfigure the 3 monitors when I come to work. This is tedious and I want to avoid that.
I can save the monitors.xml file so that even when ubuntu overwrites it I can restore it. However, the question is: how do I tell ubuntu to read the file? I don't want to logout or reboot.

I want to install Hadoop & Spark using aptitude, not the lengthy and complicated process described in How to install Hadoop?.
hadoop-ubuntu appears to have been dead for almost 2 years.
I wonder why Hadoop and Spark have not been packaged for Ubuntu (beyond the usual "there are no volunteers").
PS. My goal is to develop locally and deploy to a Spark server.
I just upgraded System76 Gazelle laptop to 15.04 and wifi no longer works.
It sees many networks and tries to connect to mine, but fails repeatedly (/var/log/syslog seems to indicate authentication failure, but the password in the /etc/NetworkManager/.../my-wifi is, of course, correct).
I tried rebooting both the laptop and the wireless modem.
I also tried Fn-F11 (which now turns on "airplane mode") with no results.
I also tried wired internet which is also ignored.
How do I restore the WiFi?
I connect to wifi and ifconfig report 3 interfaces (lo, eth0 and wlan0), but I cannot ping anything, including the router.
Only after ifconfig eth0 down I get to actually use the internet.
What is going on? How do I avoid this problem?

The Medibuntu Project has come to an end: what do I do now?
How do I find packages on my system which came from medibuntu? The previous question seems to list medibuntu packages explicitly - is there a way to query the package database by the source?
Do I need to remove them so that they are replace by maintained packages from other sources?

I have 5 users on an ubuntu box and I want each user to have AdBlock+ (and a few others) for both FireFox and Chrome.
Is there a way to avoid logging in as each one with GUI and starting both browsers and installing the plugins by hand?

Neither lsusb -v, nor /proc/bus/input/devices offers any obvious hints, although the former says a lot of 2.0 root hub which might imply v2 and not v3. Right?
