I have bought a PCM2903C Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) connected to my Ubuntu 20.04 laptop via USB. But why does Sound Settings contain these 2 settings?:

1. Digital Input (S/PDIF) - PCM2903C Audio Codec
2. Analog Input - PCM2903C Audio Codec

(Plus internal microphone)

In other words: What does "analog input" by USB mean? Isn't all USB input supposed to be digital? That's why I bought a PCM2903C ADC...! The device is only connected by USB, not by SPDIF. Although the PCM2903C does have a SPDIF interface.

In Terminal I do this command:

ls --all --recursive -1 *.htm*

or this:

ls -a -R -1 *.htm*

But it only lists the html-files in the current directory...?!

According to 'man ls' that option has this function:

       -R, --recursive
              list subdirectories recursively

I know from Krusader Search that there are about 40 html-files in the sub-folders... But why will 'ls' not list them?

I might add that I just discovered that the following command does the job:

find . -name '*.htm*'

I have just wasted a lot of time trying to edit an error on this page - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/Installation - or at least tell someone about the error. But that all seems impossible. For instance, when I login on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ there is no way of filing a new bug, and when I login on https://discourse.ubuntu.com/c/desktop/8 there is no way of starting a new thread. So the only way I can make ANYONE aware of the error is here:

The problem is simply that these 2 sentences:

If 0 it means that your CPU doesn't support hardware virtualization.

If 1 or more it does - but you still need to make sure that virtualization is enabled in the BIOS.

Should have been:

If 0 it means that either your CPU doesn't support hardware virtualization or you need to enable it in the BIOS.

If 1 or more it does.

MAYBE one could add:

• but you should still check that virtualization is enabled in the BIOS.

On How to share files between Ubuntu and OSX? I found these apparently easy instructions on how to connect to my Mac from Ubuntu:

In mac OS, go to System preferences > sharing and enable Personal File Sharing

In Ubuntu open DashHome and open the Files folder. (or however you know how to get to the files folder.)

In the sidebar, choose Browse Network

As long as the two machines are on the same network, your mac should be in there as a directory that you can mount within Ubuntu.

On Ubuntu 20.04 I open Files (also called Nautilus) *> Other Locations,I choose MacBook Pro ... under Networks. Then a window pops up asking for Username, Domain, Password. But no matter whether I use name and password for the Mac or Ubuntu it doesn't work. And what is "Domain"? I tried "Staff" (and "WORKGROUP"). Nothing works!

PS: The Mac is a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) running MacOS Catalina Ver. 10.15.7. It seems to be using SMB for networking.

It seems that my Ubuntu 20.04 has slowed down the cursor blinking. Even if I go to Settings → Universal Access → Cursor Blinking and change the Speed, it doesn't help at all. I even tried switching cursor blinking off and on, to "reset" it. Didn't help. It's very unpractical to have to wait for a second or more before you know where you are in a text editor!

I tried using the procedure explained on https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/report-ubuntu-bug.html.en to report this problem. But that 'ubuntu-bug' command doesn't work either...

Description:

If I have 1 or 2 tabs in Firefox with financial charts like https://finance.yahoo.com/chart/GDXJ and I 'mess around' with them, suddenly Firefox AND Ubuntu 20.04 becomes totally unresponsive. The only thing that 'works' is the mouse cursor is moving. So I have to turn off the power on my laptop. I tried pressing a bunch of key combinations, and the only thing that happened was something called 'tty4' login...(?)

I installed Ubuntu 20.04 on a new partition less than a week ago. I have not yet gotten all the basic stuff to work. But now, from time to time, 20.04 pops up a small window saying "Authentication is required to run gvfsd-admin daemon". But even though I enter my Ubuntu password and press it will not go away. Not even if I press the Cancel-button. Which, by the way, is a bit difficult to do, because instead you activate functions in a window BEHIND the authentication-window(!!) The only way of making the screen usable again is to restart Ubuntu... VERY annoying!

The menu in Archive Manager has an item "New Archive". When you choose it, you get to write the name of a new archive. You can also supply a password! But the archive is not created and you are not asked which files to put in it... So why does Archive Manager have a menu item "New Archive" when it has no function?

In Files you can select a bunch of files and on the right-click menu there is an option to copy them into a new archive. But you cannot give the archive a password!

So how do I create a password protected archive?

In Ubuntu 18.04 the topbar of the Terminal window contains the following pull-down menus:

File - Edit - View - Search - Terminal - Help

In 20.04 they were missing. I DID manage to turn them on, by right-clicking inside the Terminal window. But I think it would have been more logical if you could just turn them on in Preferences.

The worst thing is that I have to turn on the menu bar every time I enter the terminal... That seems kind of primitive to me.

I have a large amount of password protected files in a zip archive that I created in Ubuntu 18.04 or maybe even earlier. In Ubuntu 18.04 LTS I can extract the password protected files from the zip archive without any problems.

Now I have installed Ubuntu 20.04 on a new partition, but when I boot on that and try to extract files from the password protected zip archive I get an error message. This is not very reassuring!

It fails whether I just click on the file (inside the zip archive) or I right-click it and choose 'extract' from the menu. In the latter case it DOES ask me for a password, but still fails reading the file.

In both cases the error message is: "An error occurred while extracting files". Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

NB: An alternative would be to extract all files in 18.04 and try to password protect them in a new archive in 20.04. Could that be done?

I am quite sure my Lenovo Thinkpad L570 has a Gigabit (1000 Mb/s) Ethernet interface. So why does the wired Network Settings say Link Speed 10 Mb/s? (Speedtests often say more than 200 Mb/s upload and download.) OK. Here comes the output of "$ sudo lshw -C network":

I presume "size: 10Mbit/s" corresponds to the line "Link speed 10 Mb/s" in Ubuntu Network Settings.

I have asked the following question on ask.libreoffice.org but nobody answered:

I have an Enigmail PGP signature that I use in Thunderbird under Ubuntu Linux. In Libre Office I can use it to sign (and encrypt) an ODT-document. But when I try to use it during export of a document as a PDF document something goes wrong. In the 'PDF Options' window on the 'Digital Signature' tab, I click on the 'Select' button and get the 'Select Certificate' window. My signature is already selected (it's the only one present). I now click on 'Sign'. The window closes, but the signature isn't shown in the field called "Use this certificate to digitally sign PDF documents:". So when I press the 'Export' button, I get a "signature generation failed" error message, and export of the PDF file fails.

Can anyone help me please?

I also tried signing an existing PDF-file, following the instructions here. In other words:

1. Open LibreOffice Draw
2. File-menu -> Digital Signatures -> Sign existing PDF.
3. Select/open document.
4. Press 'Sign Document' button.

But here, my signature isn't shown, so I can't select it and sign with it.

In Ubuntu I installed 'GNOME Color Manager'. According to Ubuntu this software is supposed to be used with 'GNOME Control Center'. But I can't find 'GNOME Control Center' anywhere. Has it ceased to exist? My real problem is that I want to color calibrate my HP printer. But to do that, I need to print out a color calibration sheet without any profile enabled and later I need to import and enable a newly created ICC profile. According to the printer calibration service, printing of the sheet, without any ICC profile enabled, can be done with GIMP. But that seems like 'shooting sparrows with cannons'...

Regexxer is a brilliant search-replace tool for multiple files, but suddenly it stopped working August 10. I posted this on the Regexxer bug page:

I used this brilliant program less than 20 hours ago without any problems, but now it doesn't find the text string, although it is taken from one of the files in the left panel. I am using version 0.10-3 installed directly from the Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS repository. I also tried reinstalling it. Didn't help.
Please help.

According to ClipIt: how to use actions? : If you Right-Click on the ClipIt icon you will see the Preferences Item. But that is not true! At least not on my Ubuntu 18.04. I get a list of clips whether I right-click or left-click. I also asked the question on https://sourceforge.net/p/gtkclipit/support-requests/4/ but nobody has answered.

I can access my Android phone in Files (Nautilus), but how do I access it in Krusader?

I can type 'mtp:/' in the Location Bar, but I get this error:

"Error: Protocol not supported by Krusader: mtp:/"

What is wrong?

I recently upgraded to the new Ubuntu 18.04 LTS 'Bionoc Beaver'. By chance I have now discovered that it has disabled the Mozillateam PPA in "Software & updates" -> Other software: ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/ppa/ubuntu But why? Can I simply enabled it again, or will it do so by itself, when it considers it safe?

I am trying to open a '.txt' file in Krusader. I want it to be opened by the Ubuntu 17.10 editor 'Text', but when I press 'Return', the file is opened by LibreOffice 5 - very strange...

I have tried looking at Ubuntu Settings -> Details -> Default Applications, but there are only 6 'types', text not being one of them. When I hit 'Return' in the File Manager 'Files' (Nautilus) the file is opened correctly by 'Text'. So what is going on here? :-)

Krusader seems like a great program (very similar to Total Commander in Windows). But it opens up a window which is wider/broader than the screen, and it seems impossible to shrink it. That is VERY unpractical. But I CAN change the height of the window. Neither is it possible to move the vertical line dividing the 2 panels. So what is wrong.

In Total Commander in Windows I created a password-protected zip-archive. I can't unzip files from it in Ubuntu 17.10 (neither in Files nor in Krusader). Then I extracted all files in Windows, started Ubuntu and packed them all in a new password-protected archive (in Krusader I think). These files can be extracted using the new password in the Ubuntu File Manager (Files), but they cannot be extracted in Krusader. So I guess I am reporting 2 problems... Somewhere in the middle of this I followed an advice telling me to use the command 'sudo apt-get install p7zip' in the terminal. I don't know if that helped or worsened things... :-)
