How to make network settings permanent?

I have Ubuntu 24.04 and a local network. I try to configure in the Network settings a wired connection with manual IPv4 mode, static IP address, I apply it and it works, but after a while it is still trying to get an address through DHCP. I reopen the network dialog and it came back to Automatic (DHCP), though my static address still works. Restarting didn't change anything. It's like "Apply" is not saving my settings.

After many tries to reconnect through DHCP, it gives up and disables the connection, rendering the static IP unusable.

I tried also creating a configuration file in /etc/netplan/ or editing /etc/netplan/01-network-manager-all.yaml, but to no avail, same behavior.

CPU usage too high on Ubuntu 20.10

It's been some days since everything got slowed down on my Dell Latitude 5480. I have 16GB RAM, rarely its usage goes beyond 40%, but applications that normally don't use that much CPU now they go up to 100%, especially videos. I tried switching from Firefox to Chromium, I disabled GPU acceleration on Firefox, to no avail. On those cases, top would show Firefox or Chromium as culprits, but in the Firefox tasks console there's nothing wrong, no tab is especially taking too much CPU in Firefox's opinion. I would like to stress that this wasn't happening at all some days ago. is there a way to disable the eye icon in the login screen to prevent from someone "accidentally" turning it on and thus showing their password in plain sight? Thank you!

Ubuntu 18.04 gnome-shell high CPU usage

I installed 18.04 from 17.04 (passing briefly through 17.10, didn't test it and jumped to 18.04) and I am experiencing a high cpu usage on gnome-shell, it takes almost all available CPU time:

I first used nvidia drivers, then I switched to intel graphics, and still the same behavior. It only stops when switching to Unity shell, but for some reason in Unity I have no sound (!). I saw several reports here and on Reddit, but none provided a solution, not even a clue of what it might be happening. I have no other gnome-shell extension than those that comes with a default 18.04 install, if any.
