18.04 with latest updates.

I am trying to modify my /etc/hosts file so I can access my local server via its hostname.
I make the change with sudo nano /etc/hosts, and it sticks fine for the current session. However, after rebooting my system or suspending it, the file reverts itself back to the state it was in before I edited it.
I have attempted to edit using both the terminal in a graphical session as well as from a tty prompt on a fresh boot with no avail.
This has only started happening since a new router was installed in my homes network, however I cannot see why that would cause this issue.

Just an hour ago sound was working fine, I suspended my laptop and since I have come back to it I no longer have sound and my sound card is not being detected.

Ubuntu 18.04, Thinkpad E570. I have tried using both the headphone jack and the built in speakers.

I will summarize the steps I have already tried(In roughly chronological order):

First:

pulseaudio -k && sudo alsa force-reload

followed by a reboot. No affect.

Second:

sudo apt remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio

followed by

sudo apt install alsa-base pulseaudio && sudo alsa force-reload

and a reboot. No affect.

Third:

sudo apt install build-essential linux-headers-'uname -r' alsa-base alsa-firmware-loaders alsa-oss alsa-source alsa-tools alsa-tools-gui alsa-utils alsamixergui

reboot, no affect.

Then tried to install drivers from here, reboot, no affect.

lsmod | grep snd_hda_intel used to have output, but I dont have a copy of that handy unfortunately.

I followed the official Yubico guide to enable Challenge-Response 2FA on my account, However on a reboot the login prompts for the Yubikey, then asks for my password, and then repeats these 2 prompts with no end. If I switch to a TTY and attempt to login with root, I get an Authentication Failure message after it prompt for both the Yubikey and my password. For now, I just want to find a way to disable 2FA so that I can diagnose and fix the problem in my own time.
My question is, If I boot with a live CD and simply comment out the line in the PAM configuration file, will that be sufficient to allow me to get back into my laptop?

When I try to upgrade my packages, I receive a message that curl and libcurl3 have been kept back. I did not do this myself.

Referring to "The following packages have been kept back:" Why and how do I solve it?, when I try to apt install curl and libcurl3 it fails as curl depends on libcurl4.

When I try to install libcurl4, I receive the following output:

Uninstalling .NET Core is not an option. Can I safely ignore the fact that curl has been held back? Will .NET Core eventually be updated to use the new curl version? Is there a third option?

I have 2 monitors connected to an AMD R9 380 GPU, one with DisplayPort (Primary) and one with HDMI (Secondary).

I first tried to use the secondary a few days ago without any problems, however when I tried to activate it a second time today the primary flashes off and back on (as normally happens when a second display is added) and the Keep/Revert dialog is shown, however the secondary remains off.

Looking through the syslog, I believe this error is the culprit as it occurs on each occasion I try to activate the secondary: 

Config not applicable: 
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied: The requested configuration is based on stale information

I found this related issue and tried the suggestions noted in the top 2 answers with no success.

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04 with all updates installed and no additional drivers or kernel modules.
