Description of problem: Upon wake/resume from sleep/suspend, the machine often (not always) fails to turn on the screen, forcing a system reboot. Screen is OFF not just black. The rest of the machine seems to be running (fans, keyboard lights etc)

Troubleshooting:

Things I've tried:

• Cannot switch to terminal or gui with alt+ctrl+F2 or alt+ctrl+F3. when the screen is off/blank
• external projector DOES turn on, every time if I have it hooked up.
• tried adding kernel parameters: amd_iommu=on iommu=pt with no success
• I've tried disabling compositor in KDE. No success.
• tried letting it autosleep vs forced sleep, tried waking it via power button, lid opening, keyboard input. No success or difference.
• seemingly no difference between ac power vs battery
• sleep works fine on windows 10

Ubuntu 18.04. KeepassXC installed via flatpak. I added it to the startup list, using filepath

/var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications/org.keepassxc.KeePassXC.desktop

but it will not startup on boot. It does start quicker than normal when I manually launch it, so I suspect it's just not showing up in the system tray as it should.

Not sure what other data to provide. I do have various gnome extension installed but I'm not sure of the most efficient way to provide those short of typing out all 15 of them. If it's beneficial, please let me know of a concise/efficient method of exporting that list.

Realtek Ethernet Controller

My internet connection via Ethernet will occasionally (few times a week, using it about 10 hours a week) just quit working. There is no indicator that there is an issue (like in the system tray) other than nothing will load.

Toggling the Ethernet connection off and back on, fixes the issue.

Not sure what other data or logs to provide. Please let me know what would help and I'll provide it. Thanks!

Ubuntu 18.04. 90% of the time, my internet is fine. But occasionally, my ethernet loses access to the internet. After about 5 minutes it usually regains access, or after I log out of the user sessions and back in.

Not a network issue bc my phone still has internet access.

Using this over local wifi network.

When I try to scan using the physical button, it prompts "scan to pc" press OK, then choose "file", then it says "no pc found"

I've installed drivers from the brother site and everything else works. I can scan to file using the Simple Scan software with Ubuntu and it works fine.

I installed the driver for the physical scan button mentioned here https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=dcpl2550dw_us&os=128 "Scan-key-tool 64bit (deb package)" and followed the instructions and installed it, but it still doesn't work.

Any suggestions?

Ubuntu 18.04

I have Flathub added as a repo to update flatpaks that are installed. But I like to update my system with

 sudo apt update 

 sudo apt upgrade

Currently, I have to open the ubuntu software center and click update all to apply updates to the flatpaks that are appearing in the software center (added that feature per instructions on Flathub website.

How can I make apt update apt upgrade, also update my flatpaks?

I have separate partition for root, home, and swap on the same disk.

I accidentally deleted /bin won't get into that here.

I have a backup via timeshift. But can't boot into the system. Not sure how to restore the timeshift backup of /bin only here are my options I'm thinking of doing:

Couple questions:

1. Boot into live ubuntu 18.04 environment, open a terminal. As root, copy the /bin backup to my root system of my system's disk.

2. From live environment, should I use rsync to move it back? Something like:

   sudo rsync -a /directory/to/timeshiftbackup /(rootofsystemdisk)
   

3. From live environment, install Timeshift, restore it via timeshift restore?

I have some other questions too:

A. What permissions should /bin have on it? So I can double check to make sure Timeshift didn't alter it somehow

I made a simple bash script file that flags my next reboot to choose the windows grub entry. For quick rebooting into windows straight from Linux DE.

The problem is I have to use dconf to modify executable files to ask, so I can click run in terminal where it automatically asks for password. Otherwise, just executing the file does nothing, bc it's waiting for a password input.

Is there a way to run a bash script file like this with inherent sudo privileges so it doesn't need to ask for a password?

EDIT (even though it's directed at @waltinator, because comment formatting is atrocious):

So would

/bin/kill

be the location and name of my bash script file? for example, my bash script file is named restart2windows and is located on my desktop:

/home/myusername/Desktop/restart2windows

so I would just need to add this line to /etc/sudoers (I'm still unclear on editing that file, using visudo, and whether I should edit sudoers.d as advised):

myusername     mymachinename = NOPASSWD: /home/myusername/Desktop/restart2windows

Would this be correct?

I tried editing sudoers via visudo:

sudo visudo

and added the line I suggested above, below the commented line:

#includedir /etc/sudoers.d

and then tried to run my bash script file from my desktop, and it did nothing. If I choose to run it in the terminal, the terminal is waiting for a password input.

Here is my bash script file contents, very simple:

Found this question here and it appears that I need to add sudo somewhere in there? I'm confused by that answer to that question because his line of code from the OP does not match the OP's.

I'd like to change it globally for the whole system and not on a per app basis. Currently it seems like they NEVER timeout and I have to stop what I'm doing to close them.

Similar to how it displays ACTIVE windows?

Quite often, without repeatable or consistent trigger, the whole GUI freezes. It will happen while clicking things and while simply sitting there idle. After a minute or so, it flashes and reloads the desktop, all prior open apps are still open and running. Including audio that was playing.

I'd like to see the logs of what is causing it to crash but I don't know where to look. I'm about to switch to XFCE or Plasma bc it happens everyday at least once.

I read this: How to download a GitHub repo as .zip using command line but I'm still unclear about it.

Is there or is there not a way to add github or a github project, as a repo to Ubuntu 18.04, so that when I install a program, say freetube for example, from that repo, it will stay up to date.

The button in the taskbar. I click it once to restart and the system acts like nothing happened (I do see steam system tray close). Then once I click it again, it immediately reboots.

I have steam, Private Internet access, keepass, and nextcloud, running in the background. Not sure what else I need to provide to help troubleshoot.

Ubuntu Gnome 18.04.

None of my audio devices (S/PDIF interfaces, HDMI, or USB Kingston HyperX headphones) appear in the sound panel, of my fresh install.

I've used MANY distros, including this Ubuntu 18.04, with the same headphones on the same machine, over the past few years, and have never had this issue.

I found this article and it said to do the following:

sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base

sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio

sudo apt-get install alsa-base

sudo apt-get install pulseaudio

sudo alsa force-reload

Then reboot

THIS WORKS, but after rebooting it's missing all of the devices again. I tried everything else in that article as well.

I also tried removing the folder:

~.config/Pulse

and rebooting to have the system rebuild it, but it doesn't work either. The contents of that folder are as follows:

Those commands from the article no longer work, even temporarily anymore. I found this article and did this command:

pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog

and it immediately fixes it. So how can I make this happen automatically at boot? I'd still like to know how this was broken too, since I've never had this issue before....

I had libinput-gestures installed on my laptop running Ubuntu 18.04 using the Xfce desktop environment. When I open a terminal, it displays a message at the top:

property 'libinput Accel Speed' doesn't exist, you need to specify its type and format

I've since removed it per the github page instructions: https://github.com/bulletmark/libinput-gestures

I also deleted the config file in /home/.config.

But the error persists whenever I start up a terminal.

What do I need to do to fix this error?

I understand they all use WINE, and I have a slight understanding of what WINE does. But I don't really understand the difference between the mentioned softwares, and why or when to use one over the other. Thanks

I use Ubuntu 18.04. I play games using lutris and steam with proton. I've read some people warn against "wine dependency hell". What is this and how can I avoid this?

When I try to get games running in Lutris, I typically just use the script they provide on their site for said game. Otherwise I stumble around in Lutris, it fully understanding what I'm doing, hoping to get the game working.

AMD 390x connected to monitor via display port.

Haven't booted into my ubuntu partition for a while. The only thing I had installed was Steam, Steam for linux, wine, and this Padoka PPA

Booted it up, decided to run:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Afterwards it said it needed to reboot...

Before rebooting, I also installed from the package manager:

• various desktop wallpapers from previous ubuntu releases via terminal
• Dropbox
• KeepassXC
• KeepassXC snap (by accident, then removed it)
• Qbitorrent

I also installed Brave Browser via (per their site):

Then when I went to open Brave browser, everything locked up and the screen made a bunch of graphical glitches. I hard rebooted and it just kept showing the Ubuntu loading screen ("Ubuntu" with the 5 or so dots beneath it). It would show this screen, then go black and do this about 5 times. Ultimately ending in a bunch of static on the screen (graphical glitch) and I'd have to hard reboot it.

Tried rebooting it 3 times, same thing each time. I booted into windows 7 from grub just fine so it's not hardware.

Any ideas?

Clean install of 18.04 I have a R9 390X and FX 6350 cpu. Trying to follow this advice by u/toidiboy: in this reddit post

Edited /etc/default/grub by adding:

radeon.si_support=0 radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 amdgpu.cik_support=1"

It is otherwise the default with only:

"quiet splash

at the beginning.

Save it then run sudo apt-get update.Reboot and it won't load. I don't remember what DID show but I can't reproduce without breaking my current install again.

TLDR: How can I repair my grub parameters when I break it like this? Can I boot from livedisk and edit that grub commandline that's in my installed Ubuntu?
