I'm trying to revive this old computer with windows 8.1 installed running very very slow. But when booting from usb, I got "blank" screen with just 1 color, and the color go changing. If I try to boot with safe graphics, I just got a glimpse of the wallpaper then this:

What I'm missing?

EDIT: starting ubuntu in safe graphics gives me this error:

[drm:radeon_module_init [radeon]] *ERROR* No UMS support in radeon module!

EDIT2: I was able to try-live ubuntu 20.04.1 y 18.04.6 but the colored blank screen appears after a few minutes...

quick question, I'm wondering if it's better to add all ppas first then do 1 update or should I add each ppa one by one and update each time?

I have this pretty simple set of instructions to restore my themes and icons in ubuntu:

I'm trying do everything from cli, so then I can add it to a mayor script. But I haven't been able to figure out how to do the first and last steps (commented ones) directly from cli, or if it is possible. Is it? Maybe backing up some config files and then restoring them?

I'm on ubuntu 20.04.

I found and slightly modify the following script, that monitor the notify-send notifications and dump them in a file.

If I run it manually:

notifylog notifylog.txt

the process keeps working for a while but eventually stops. If I add it to crontab like:

@reboot /path/to/file/notifylog /home/user/notifylog.txt

it executes once and then stops (or it last running very little).

I even tried adding it to the startup applications like:

/path/to/file/notifylog /home/user/notifylog.txt

and same result. The following works when executed manually but not from crontab or startup applications:

I added to systemd with the following steps:

sudo nano /lib/systemd/system/notifylog.service

then I added:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable notifylog.service
sudo systemctl start notifylog.service

EDIT: now I added it to systemd as user with the following steps

First, add the .service file to /home/user/.config/systemd/user. Then execute:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
systemctl --user enable notifylog.service
systemctl --user start notifylog.service
systemctl --user status notifylog.service

This start the service correctly, but if I reboot my machine,

systemctl --user status notifylog.service

gives me:

● notifylog.service - notify-send log
     Loaded: loaded (/home/user/.config/systemd/user/notifylog.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)
     Active: inactive (dead)

What I'm missing now?

I've been almost a year with Ubuntu 20.04 installed, yesterday my screen froze, had to do a hard reset and when it rebooted, I got the error message. Most of the solutions I found says that enabling the legacy setting in the bios settings the problem but not in my case.... Is there anything I can do?

I have ubuntu 20.04 and I'm considering upgrading... I remember a few years ago that I tried on another machine, and it just didn't work, I had to reinstall from 0. Then on my next machine I had to use windows and just last year I came back to ubuntu.

Now, it's been a few years since then... it's still an issue or it it safe to upgrade directly?

I installed texlive on ubuntu 20.04 with:

sudo apt -y install texlive-latex-extra texlive-extra-utils texlive-font-utils

when trying to install a latex package (any) i got:

/usr/bin/tlmgr: unexpected return value from verify_checksum: -5

any ideas?

EDIT: Hello, i install packages with tlmgr install package_name. tlmgr installs when installing latex... Output of dpkg -S $(which tlmgr)

I have to install ubuntu on another machine, so I downloaded the iso from ubuntu web page and tried to follow the tutorial to create the bootable usb stick, but startup disk creator won't open in my ubuntu 18.04 machine, even though I removed and reinstalled it.

So I start searching for a cli alternative and found this tool:

sudo apt install wimtools

I run it on my iso and selected the usb device and it's been like this all night:

So, I want to know if I can kill this without killing my usb stick and if you can point out to an alternative it would be great. In the meantime I will keep looking.

Yesterday I turned my PC on and all system fonts look like this:

Terminal looks normal.

Any way to fix this from command line? Or do I need to go nuclear and re-install Ubuntu?

I am using Ubuntu 18.04.

I'm on ubuntu 18.04, and my laptop is a dell inspiron 15 5000 series with a intel core i7-7500u cpu and a radeon graphics card: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 620 (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Topaz XT [Radeon R7 M260/M265 / M340/M360 / M440/M445].

I usually use a second monitor connected trough the hdmi port and every time I disconnect it, my laptop froze and I have to hard reboot...

I did a search, but most problems I found are when connecting a monitor. Any help will be appreciated.

I have Ubuntu Mate on a raspberry pi 3 and I'm trying to install Octave without success so far. I got (sorry if its not accurate, I translated from Spanish):

$  sudo apt-get -y install octave
 octave : dependency: octave-common (= 4.0.0-3ubuntu9.2) but 4.2.2-1~octave~xenial2 will be installed

$ sudo apt-get -y install octave-common
octave-common is in its more recent version (4.2.2-1~octave~xenial2).

how do i fix it?
