Often I have this screen while doing things on my laptop:
What is this and what does it indicate? The brightness of the screen automatically dims when this appears and can't be restored to normal, even when there is enough battery remaining. I have to restart my system every time to make it go.

I am using a live cd to take backup of a file.This was my problem.
Now I want to use tar to backup a single file Phone academics where I have accumulated other files and I want to create the backup in the same folderPhone cademics at /media/ubuntu/af89d536-745d-4899-971b-27cba56930be/alpha/Desktop/Phone academics.
I changed the directory using cd /media/ubuntu/af89d536-745d-4899-971b-27cba56930be/alpha/Desktop/Phone academics which gives the result: bash: cd: /media/ubuntu/af89d536-745d-4899-971b-27cba56930be/alpha/Desktop/Phone: No such file or directory
So I opened terminal from the folder Phone academics so the directory changes to phone academics atomatically. Is this the right way to change? It now looks like:
If I use this code tar -cvf backupphoneacademics.tar/ media/ubuntu/af89d536-745d-4899-971b-27cba56930be/alpha/Desktop/Phone academics --exclude backupphoneacademics.tar It gives:
tar: backupphoneacademics.tar/: Cannot open: Is a directory ; tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
What is wrong here? what do I do to take backup of that single file in the same folder?
I have ubuntu 16.04. several times it had asked for my permission to download updates but I denied.
Last time, when i shut down the computer something poped up, like some internal updates completed 66%. I had no knowledge of any ongoing process in the background when i clicked logout button. And there was no internet connection so i have no idea what kind of updates it was doing.
Now, when i tried to log in again, my computer started as usual.i entered the password and it suddenly showed broken logo of ubuntu. Then its just blank screen. I tried to login several times thereafter..and it showedd when i entered wrong password,but after that nothing. Only a blank scrreen wih moving cursor.

I received a pdf file which was created in Adobe. Now I had to edit this pdf file. I opened it in LibreOffice. But either the page or the text was not in the correct format. The texts were exceeding the page boundary like this :
So, when I'm saving it as pdf after necessary edits, I am losing those texts outside the page. I tried to change the format of text from Fromat > Text > adjust to contour.
Nothing happened and honestly I don't have a clue about why this is happening, what to do or how to change spacing/bullets properties or anything in Ubuntu.
Please help.
Uget was working fine until one day suddenly everything disappeared from the uget screen.
This is how it looks now.
I uninstalled it twice and reinstalled it only to see this exact screen. I can't understand if it is downloading or not in the background.
My pc runs on Ubuntu 16.04
When sending files through bluetooth, it doesn't expand the image I click, so that I can be sure of the image I want to send.
Is there any settings to change that ?
EDIT : As GabrielaGarcia mentioned : "Open with file manager" seems to be inactive
I installed Ubuntu 16.04 using LVM method. Now while trying to re-partition HDD using Gparted, I saw that my HDD present situation is like this :
LVM is using the entire part of extended space. (Also both of them are locked ? why ? I did not lock those with any password or anything!!)
I searched through this forum and found another similar question LVM Hard disk partitioning after Ubuntu installation and did as pas4080 said.
While defragmenting with
sudo e4defrag /mnt
I got the result
Success: [ 140820/243617 ]
Failure: [ 102797/243617 ]
though each of the processes showed to be 'ok'
2nd step showed : $ umount /dev/ubuntu-vg/root
umount: /mnt: umount failed: Operation not permitted
Now I don't know what the faliure was or why umount was not permitted. Can anybody help me here?

sudo umount /dev/vg_ubuntu/lv_root
[sudo] password for alpha:

IT is saved in "Downloads" folder
Went through the "readme" which said
Unpack the tarball : # tar vjxf r8101-1.aaa.bb.tar.bz2
Change to the directory: # cd r8101-1.aaa.bb
When I ran the command
tar vjxf r8101-1.033.00.tar.bz2
It gave the following error :
tar (child): r8101-1.033.00.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
I then tried to change the directory to "r8101-1.033.00" :
cd r8101-1.033.00
and it gave back :

What am I doing wrong ? how should I do it ?

Though it is mentioned for Wi-Fi connection, still thought of giving it a try. This is what I got :

I don't know what's wrong in my pc. It runs on Ubuntu 16.04.
When I give sudo command, it asks for password. When I give password, it does not accept.
sudo -i

The password is correct, I checked that. The keyboard layout is okay, I typed the exact password.
To fix this I tried to follow this: Cannot run any sudo command
The Simple fix one did not work, so I tried the complex fix one, rebooting in recovery mode. Got to this step:
bit I could not enter the whole command of
mount -o remount,rw /
chmod chmod u=rwxs,g=rx,o=rx /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/pkexec
exit
before I could complete /usr/bin/sudo, it started to run commands on its own and resumed. So, here I am, not understanding anything. Can anybody help me ?
Previously I owned a Windows7 laptop which had died few days back. My new laptop runs Ubuntu 16.04.
Now I want to use the HDD of previous laptop as external. I can do that right (running windows hdd in ubutu as external) ?
So, before buying any enclosure I wanna know if I need any special kind of enclosure to make it work with Ubuntu or all these random enclosure works fine. Thanks.
