After having some problems with an old desktop (not a laptop), I decided to fix it for good. I've changed the motherboard (the old one kept failing), RAM, cooler, etc. Now the desktop has the following specs: 8gb of RAM, i5 processor, 1tb HD. All in all, it's a pretty decent computer. However, after changing the motherboard, I lost my windows 10 license. I don't really care about W10, so this gave me the opportunity to clean out my HD and remove W10.

All this to say that now I have a PC without an OS. I'd like to install the latest Ubuntu version on it, but I don't know if it's compatible. I know that Ubuntu's website has a list for hardware compatibility, but that's mostly for laptops and desktops that have been built by a company and never been altered. My desktop is just a bunch of parts from different brands.

So my question is: is Ubuntu gonna work on it? I know that's too broad, and there isn't an exact way of knowing. But if anyone has done something similar in the past, I'd appreciate some insight. I mean, even if I install and it runs fine, will I have incompatibility issues in the future such as not being able to use all my 8gb of RAM, or just the PC suddenly not working?

Another question that popped in my head: if Ubuntu is not the best OS for a desktop that has been assembled from scratch, which Linux distro (Linux Mint, CentOS, etc.) would be best (has the highest chance of compatibility)?

This is not a programming question.

I have a machine running Ubuntu, and I installed Golang on it. It was working fine... I even ran a few programs, but the "go1.11.2.linux-amd64.tar.gz" file was in my home directory so I thought it would be okay to move it to the Downloads directory. After moving it, I can't use any Go command, and I get command 'go' not found. I tried moving the file back to the home directory, but I'm still getting the same error.

Can anybody explain to me what's going on? Thanks!!

Command 'go' not found, but can be installed with:

sudo snap install go         # version 1.11.2, or
sudo apt  install golang-go
sudo apt  install gccgo-go

The commands I used to install Go :

wget https://dl.google.com/go/go1.11.2.linux-amd64.tar.gz
sudo tar -C /usr/local -xzf go1.11.2.linux-amd64.tar.gz
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/go/bin
source ~/.profile

I've recently installed Ubuntu on a Lenovo/Windows10, and during installation I chose the option "delete your existing operating system and replace it with Ubuntu" which I thought it had worked fine. But when I restart my laptop pressing F12 I can still see the Windows OS and Debian (which I used for a little while) on the device specs. I thought both windows and debian would not be on the machine by now.

Now I'm trying to create a new partition table, and so I deleted all partitions except for the current one (/dev/sda2) because I just can't.

• I tried using GParted.
• I tried running ~$ umount -l /dev/sda2
• I tried from root ~# umount --force /dev/sda2
  

Nothing works. What should I do?

Btw, I'm only using 15GB out of 500GB..which sucks. Should I use something like Darik's Boot and Nuke to wipe everything and install ubuntu again from my flash drive?

I'm listing below the specs of my Lenovo laptop:

• Lenovo ThinkPad T430
• 2349-Core i5 2.6 GHz-3230M/64-bit
• Windows 10 Pro/Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
• 4 Gb RAM
• 500 Gb HDD
• DVD
• printer
• 1366 x 768/14 wide
• HD-Intel HD Graphics
• update 4000

I'm hoping to run the latest Ubuntu on my Laptop, but it's not on Ubuntu Desktop certified hardware list, and so I'm a little worried that if I switch from Windows10 to Ubuntu the hardware might not be 100% compatible resulting in poor performance.

As a side note, I did see the T440 and T450 in the list but for past releases, and Lenovo in general seems to be pretty compatible with Linux.

Do you guys think that it's okay to make the switch? Thanks!!
