Based on this answer I have verified that I have the "US, international with dead keys" keyboard layout available:

$ cat /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/base.lst | grep US,\ international\ with\

Then, based on this answer, I try to change the keyboard layout from the command line. But setxkbmap -v intl fails:

Ok, so apparently the following succeeds:

$ setxkbmap -model pc105 -layout us -variant intl
$ echo $?
0

I was following the instructions to install Python3.6 on my Ubuntu 16.04 machine from here and in the process I also did some sudo apt-get purge on some Python3.5 packages (so that I would only keep the 3.6 stuff). Looking at my history I see I did stuff like the following:

sudo apt-get purge python3
sudo apt autoremove
sudo apt-get purge python3.5
sudo apt-get purge python3.5-minimal 
sudo apt-get purge python3-minimal
sudo apt-get purge libpython3-stdlib
sudo apt-get purge libpython3.5
sudo apt-get purge libpython3.5-minimal 
sudo apt-get purge libpython3.5-stdlib
sudo apt-get --purge autoremove

I also installed python3-pip.

The end result of the above depradations has (weirdly) messed up with my terminal appearence. Below you see my old terminal appearance to the left (that terminal was launched before the above commands) and the new appearance (to the right):

A number of things aren't right with the new appearence of the terminal:

• no vertical scroll bar (the window to the left automatically shows a scroll bar when it receives focus)
• no menu bar
• different brackground color
• diffrent font and font size
• right mouse click in the terminal window does not allow me to access the terminal's profile (no pop-up menu appears).

I subsequently installed back again the packages I had removed but that didn't solve my problem.

I was initially unable to launch any new terminal at all. Once I did sudo apt-get purge gnome-terminal I was yet again able to launch new terminals (but with the wrong appearance shown above). If I install gnome-terminal I again lose the ability to launch new terminal windows. So I think I've lost the ability to launch a new gnome-terminal and all the new terminal windows I am creating are xterm terminals.

How can I restore my terminal appearance?

I'm on 16.04 running the i3 window manager.

I recently installed the inconsolata font using:

$ sudo apt-get install fonts-inconsolata

I updated the cache:

$ sudo fc-cache -fv

The font appears to be installed:

$ fc-list | grep -i inconsol
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/inconsolata/Inconsolata.otf: Inconsolata:style=Medium

Yet, when I try to use in my terminal (by trying to set the font from the terminal's menu options Edit and then "Profile Preferences", it is not listed among the available fonts.

I've also launched the Unity tweak tool using:

$ unity-tweak-tool

… and I was able to set "inconsolata medium" as the "monospace font" but nothing changed. It's not really clear to me how the monospace font configured in the Unity tweak tool relates to the font used in the terminal, but like I said, nothing changed.

Finally, as another data point, here's what I see under /usr/share/fonts:

$ find /usr/share/fonts | grep -i  incons
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/inconsolata
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/inconsolata/Inconsolata.otf

Based on a suggestion, I got the .ttf version from Google fonts and installed it in my system (and updated the fonts cache too). So now I see:

The situation remains the same: I can't select "inconsolata" in my terminal's profile preferences.

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 64bit.

Chrome (54.0.2840.100 64-bit) fonts appear very small in some places. I am referring to the rendered web content, not the browser's user interface.

The following is the way Chrome renders the new email "window" in Gmail. Observe how tiny "To" and "Subject" appear in relation to "New Message".

In contrast, Firefox renders the same "window" with more reasonable fonts (observe how "To" and "Subject" appear to be closer in size to "New Message"):

I just purchased a refurbished Lenovo T420 with pre-installed Windows 7 Professional and am trying to install Ubuntu 16.04 from a USB flash drive. Apparently, the machine is not using the familiar BIOS but something called "Windows Boot Manager" so I don't see the familiar screen in BIOS where one gets to change the order of boot devices and chose to boot from the USB.

Instead, when I press F2 during restart (with the USB flash drive inserted), I am presented with the following screen:

… so I am not allowed to install Ubuntu and my only option is to start Windows 7.

My intention is to completely wipe out Windows and install Ubuntu, not have the two of them alongside each other or anything. I've seen references to a program called "EasyBCD" but all of the instructions I've found (e.g. this one) appear to address situations where people want to install Ubuntu alongside Windows.

My use case is simpler but it's not clear to me how I should proceed. I clarify again I want to completely wipe-out Windows and their "boot manager".

Has anyone encountered any problems / issues with the new Das Keyboard 4 Professional keyboard? I 've read about some software bugs with the USB 3.0 hub and the NKRO feature causing blue screens and I was wondering whether anyone has used this keyboard on an Ubuntu system and might give some feedback.

Is there any way to force cp (Bash 4.2.5, Ubuntu 12.04) to copy onto a dangling symlink?

When reading manuals / tutorials on setting up JDBC with Tomcat I frequently come across references to the "Tomcat's HOME\lib" directory. E.g.:

Add the driver to your classpath, to your project, or to Tomcat's HOME\lib directory.

Other times, reference is made to the "$CATALINA_HOME/lib" directory. E.g.:

Before you proceed, don't forget to copy the JDBC Driver's jar into $CATALINA_HOME/lib.

I am running Tomcat 7.0.53 and am aware of the following locations:

1. /usr/share/tomcat7
2. /var/lib/tomcat7 (where the webapps/ directory resides)
3. /etc/tomcat7

Of the above location only /usr/share/tomcat7 contains a lib directory with jars. Is this the "Tomcat's HOME\lib" directory? What is then, the CATALINA_HOME/lib directory?

I am running Ubuntu 12.04. When I access the "printing" menu (System settings / printing), and right-mouse-click on a printer, a number of options are disabled (rename, delete). Do I have to somehow access that screen with sudo and how ?

Appears to be installing Django 1.3.1 in Ubuntu 12.04. How can I get Django 1.6 installed?

I just install tomcat7 on my Ubuntu 12.04 using:

sudo apt get-install tomcat7

Immediately afterwards I notice that although $CATALINA_HOME and $CATALINA_BASE are set in the script /etc/init.d/tomcat7, they are not exported on my shell. I.e. printenv | grep CATALINA yields nothing.

So the question is: should I bother or is it a good practice to also set $CATALINA_HOME and $CATALINA_BASE in my .bashrc and what would be the benefit?

I am running Ubuntu precise. I usually rely on the ALT-CTRL-T shortcut to open a new terminal. However the location is pops up as well as its size are not very convenient and I have to subsequently use the mouse to drag/resize the terminal. Is there a way to configure the terminal's initial size and location?

I am running Ubuntu precise and have the following external hard disk:

My etc/fstab has this line at the end:

Yet, when the system boots I get a message "an error occurred while mounting /media/Elements". Once I am in, a simple mount from the console succeeds:

What's wrong with my setup that doesn't allow Ubuntu to mount the external drive automatically at boot time?

Is there a console, text-only version of the sysinfo program or other similar utility? I am mostly interested in high-level info like RAM and CPU.
