When I'm trying to run Counter-Strike Global Offensive, the native version from Steam, my entire system crashes, and I receive the message with "The system can't recover, please log out". Sometimes, I can successfully start the game without any issues, but usually the system just crashes. I have found a log of the crash in /var/crash but since I am not particularly tech savvy, could someone please find out what the issue is?

I have decided to try switching to Ubuntu in a dual-boot scenario with Windows 10, and things work perfectly overall, but I have encountered one bug that really ruins the experience. I get my sound from my monitor from the displayport cable that is connected to the GPU, and this works without any issues on Windows, but on Ubuntu I've had two separate issues with it.

The first is that the system would just randomly switch from DisplayPort 3 as a audio output source to Digital Output, something that I fixed through Pavucontrol.

But the other issue, which is just as annoying, is the sound delay. Whenever I resume a video after a minute or two, the video starts, but the audio only starts after a few seconds of silence, making the entire experience be very jarring. I've set the latency in Pavucontrol to 0 but this doesn't fix it. Using Alsamixer to mute all but one of the S/PDIF options seems to help somewhat, but not completely.

I've tried to look around the internet for help, but that only made me even more confused than before, with bug reports of sound delays on HDMI from 2015 and someone suggesting a complicated measure that would have essentially played silent sounds at all times.

Is there anything I can do?

My laptop does not have a led or anything to show whether the caps lock is on or not, and while Kubuntu warns you on the lockscreen about whether your caps lock is on or not, Ubuntu seems to lack it. If you try to put in a password somewhere inside the settings or anything, then you get a little warning triangle right in the box, but there is nothing like that on the lockscreen, when trying to type the user password.

This makes the entire process a bit more difficult - if you are using a password with both uppercase and lowercase letters. Especially since you can accidentally and very easily make mistakes.

Is there a way to add such an indicator to the lockscreen? I've looked online, and I've seem some people recommending the installation of an app, but I don't think that it would work on the lockscreen.

Update: It doesn't show the caps lock warning if the system was recently rebooted. If the system is shut down and I start it, it won't show the warning if I'm typing the password for the first time.

I haven't made any sort of changes, it happens both on fresh installs of Ubuntu 18.04 and 18.10.

For some reason, I have been unable to properly install Nvidia drivers on my laptop on both Kubuntu 18.04 and 18.10. Kubuntu notifies me that I should install proprietary drivers as soon as I boot into it, but going to the driver section of the settings, I have been unable to install any of the Nvidia packages that are shown there, even if I try the option that is marked as recommended. Trying to install it on the first time shows Kubuntu as trying to install the driver, and then the drivers list simply refreshes, showing that the system is on the nouveau driver. Any further attempts to select one of the nvidia drivers and to lick apply simply results in the list refreshing back on nouveau. And, whenever the next reboot after this failed installation attempt happens, Kubuntu doesn't boot properly anymore. It boots, shows the Kubuntu logo, and then it remains black.

I've met the exact same problem on both 18.04 and 18.10. I saw some Reddit comments mentioning that this is a known issue, something on Nvidia's side I think, but I have not been able to find any details, and I'm not sure what to do.

I have an ASUS X550LB laptop, with a Intel Core i7 4500U, and Nvidia GT 740M.
