I have purchased a USB microphone, but the volume is very quiet, even when set to max. I can view the device in alsamixer and set the "Capture" bar to 100, but even so it is very quiet and unusable. Much quieter than the poor quality inbuilt mic from my computer.

Is there a way to increase the volume further?

Edit: This image shows the inbuilt mic on the left and the USB on the right, recorded in audacity, both at 100.

When I connect to my work network over VPN, I gain access to the work network and can SSH to the servers, but lose access to the internet on my local machine.

I believe this to be an issue in finding the DNS server because I can ping both web addresses and IP addresses from the work server via SSH without issue, but from my local machine, I am unable to ping web addresses:

user@local_machine:~$ ping www.google.com
ping: www.google.com: Temporary failure in name resolution

but if I ping the IP address for www.google.com (172.217.169.36) it works without issue:

user@local_machine:~$ ping 172.217.169.36
PING 172.217.169.36 (172.217.169.36) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 172.217.169.36: icmp_seq=1 ttl=114 time=34.1 ms
64 bytes from 172.217.169.36: icmp_seq=2 ttl=114 time=31.6 ms
64 bytes from 172.217.169.36: icmp_seq=3 ttl=114 time=30.7 ms

To fix this I have tried the following:

  • Checking/unchecking the box marked "use this connection only for settings on this network." in Settings>Network>VPN>VIA_VPN>IPV4 & Settings>Network>VPN>VIA_VPN>IPV4
  • Manually setting the DNS server in Settings>Network>VPN>VIA_VPN
  • Forcing the machine to use the DNS server provided by the VPN using sudo resolvectl domain via_vpn
  • updating/upgrading everything

The software versions I am using are:

The VPN is the one I have been instructed to use by work, though support seems limited.

I have some data saved in a directory which has a non-ascii character in the name, how can I access the data within?

The directory appears as:

w0p6_t[[0.53.5]?[1.71.2]]

But escaping the special characters using \ before them does not work, nor does surrounding the directory name with quotes as suggested here.

I believe this "?" is a new line character (ascii \012) as ls -lb returns:

w0p7_t[[0.53.5]\n[1.71.2]]

I can see the contents of the directory using the tree command, which shows the directory as:

w0p6_t[[0.53.5]\012[1.71.2]]

along with all of its content.

I have also tried:

cd "w0p7_t[[0.53.5]\n[1.71.2]]"
cd "w0p7_t[[0.53.5]\012[1.71.2]]"

and

cd w1p0_t\[\[0.53.5]\\012\[1.71.2\]\]
cd w1p0_t\[\[0.53.5]\\n\[1.71.2\]\]

with no success.

Also, attempting to auto-complete the command using Tab does not prompt suggestions for this directory.

My Ubuntu system has stopped producing any sound what-so-ever, since I used a set of Bluetooth headphones with it, though the Bluetooth may be unrelated, it was just the last thing I used.

First the obvious: No the headphones are not still connected, and Bluetooth is switched off. It is not muted in the system tray, and i do not have the program making the sound muted. I have tried several sources including the sound test in settings/sound. I have done both sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade as well as rebooted the system.

I have also tried:

  1. alsamixer shows the audio channels to be not unmuted and with volume, also auto-mute is disabled.
  2. pavucontrol shows several port options (headphones, speakers and line out) ports. Each showing a volume metre that is responsive to the audio sources on the computer, and the line out and headphones ports are responsive to having something plugged into them; registering plugged in/unplugged but no sound through either.
  3. input devices in both the sound tab of settings, and pavucontrol is responsive to sounds I make, so it appears the microphone is working.
  4. I have reinstalled pulseaudio and alsa-base using
sudo apt remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo apt install alsa-base pulseaudio

as well as reloading alsa with 

sudo alsa force-reload

Everything appears perfectly normal, except I get no sound output from speakers or headphones.

I want to set a keyboard shortcut to close the current window in Ubuntu 16.04. I am aware that alt+f4 already does this and that I can redefine this shortcut if I want to, but what I really want is to add an additional shortcut to perform the same function.

The reason being; I have a keyboard without designated function keys (a 60%). Instead the function keys are activated via a keyboard shortcut that toggles the row of number keys between number and function keys (for example 4 to f4 and vice versa).

I am deep in the habit of quickly closing windows using alt+f4 and want it to work regardless of whether I am in function key or number key mode, but can't seem to find what I should enter in the command field when setting a new keyboard shortcut.

I have found a good workaround to my particular problem and posted it in the answers below. Still open to more elegant solutions.

Edit: To clarify, the machine is running X11.
