I accidently ran sudo chmod 777 -R / and stopped it after a few seconds. Now nothing works including sudo.
I have a 20.04 Ubuntu live USB here. Is it possible to upgrade the 18.04 to 20.04 to get it working without losing the 3 years of work on the laptop? I don't have a recent backup. That's what the Live USB was going to be used for.
I have both a RAVPower portable SSD and a microSD. I am using a Dell XPS13 running Ubuntu 18. I'd like to save my snapshots to either of those two locations. But when I go into Settings/Where to Save Snapshot, I don't see either of those two choices. I can see them both, btw, through Nautilus, but not in the BIT menu. What to do?
I am trying to use ocelotgui which is a tool to debug SQL stored procedures. The instructs say to make sure that the path to libQt*.so appears in the $PATH. I researched how to add that to my $PATH and was told to add the last line in my .profile to point at the dir where my libQt5Gui.so.5 appears. So I added it to .profile in the last line (as instructed)as below:

I am trying to install a trial version of Acronis True Image. The website downloaded an exe file into my downloads dir. My choice was PC or MAC. I chose PC. I assumed that I could double left click on it and it would install like in Windows. It won't and I can't get into their support queue without registering the products. Ugh! Am I trying to install a Windows version on Ubuntu 18.04?
I am having a strange problem. I am trying to include a file in one of my php files that is in my /assets folder. In the php file I have the line require "/opt/docker-substantiator2/app/application/libraries/koolreport/core/autoload.php"; This line is failing and I am getting the error:

I assumed that my phpStorm didn't have the correct permissions to access autoload.php. So then I ran the following from the CLI:

I have been developing under Docker but I am running out of time and want to develop directly on my local laptop. I think I need to install LAMP first. The first step is to get apache running, but as you can see it is dead. What to do?

I have finally managed to get iReports working under Ubuntu 18.04. To start it I need to go to a command window, cd to /opt/iReports5.6.0/bin, and then type ./ireports. Why, I have no idea? If I type ireportes.exe in the bin directory it doesn't start. Regardless it took countless hours to get the correct version of java (1.7) to run instead of 1.8, which was a sticking issue. In Windows I would just create a shortcut to a batch file that would change the directory to /opt/iReports5.6.0/bin/ and then execute ./ireports. And I would then drop the shortcut onto the desktop.
Is there anything analagous in Ubuntu 18 world?
I have a need to remove jdk 1.8 and instead install jdk 1.7. Does Ubuntu 18.04 support RPM? Here are the choices I have, which one do I donwload and install?

I have tried looking this up on the web but ran into many discussions telling me to "install" a backup program, such as Timeshift. I am way past that! My system asks me to backup perhaps once per week. I guess this is the default. I want to restore the entire hard drive as it was a week or two ago.
How do I know which backup program is running? Are there instructions for the DEFAULT backup program that runs for me to restore? Again, I don't want the newest backup, I want a back from a week or two ago. And how can I tell if it will restore EVERYTHING?
I have a vbox running on my Ubuntu 18.04 Host, but I am having trouble with the networking. I have tried numerous network configurations but I am going in circles. First I tried to use Bridged interface but I read somewhere of issues with bridged on ubuntu when using wireless. Then I went to NAT for #1 and added Host-Only for #2. I then was told that I needed to port forward port 22 on 127.0.1.1 to 10.0.2.15 which is my Host Only address. Regardless, I still get "no route" when I try to start up Putty. I also noticed that when the appliance boots I get a message in Red "Failed to start Raise Network Interface" scrolling by. I don't know what thus means. I have enabled ssh on the Host. I also have NetworkManager running. What I'd like to do is delete interface #2 and start over.

I am having trouble connecting via phpmyadmin to mysql. I can bring up the login page but when I try logging in I get these 4 errors:
#2002 - Connection refused — The server is not responding (or the local server's socket is not correctly configured).

So I have been trying to find what is wrong. I did notice that my mysql.cnf is empty except for these two lines:

I have no idea what ! means in this respect but I assume that it means to use those two files instead.
I go into /etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/mysqld.cnf and I see

Is there anything wrong with this config of the local server socket? Or am I looking in the wrong place?
I have been battling with this since 9AM and it is past 7:30 PM. My application was not able to communicate with mySQL. So I wanted to make sure I could get into it through phpMyAdmin. I can bring up the login screen(via localhost/phpmyadmin) in my browser, but It won't take my user and password. I've tried stopping it, running sudo mysqld --skip-grant-tables &, and then starting it. No dice. when I type mysql at the CLI I get

This makes sense since I don't have a /var/run/ directory.
I tried mysql -u richb201 -p but I get

Is there anyway for me to remove mysql and just reinstall it?
