As the title suggests, it's a confusing one but let me elaborate.

I'd like to set up a dual boot system with Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04.

I have a 250GB SSD and would like to partition 110GB each to be used for each OS (roughly).

Currently, there is only Ubuntu installed on the hard drive which only has 40GB used.

I've tried cloning it with Clonezilla then formatting the full drive, creating two partitions and installing Windows 10 on one. I'm now stuck on trying to restore the Ubuntu image from Clonezilla to the other partition.

So my question is, can this even be done?

Can I restore the Clonezilla image to a separate partition? If so, how? Is there anything I need to take into consideration such as the original source disk being 250gb and now I'm restoring to a 110GB partition (although the data size is 40GB). Do I also have to do anything about grub?

I've been trying to work out how to edit the bash profile for the login shell in Ubuntu 18.04. Being new to linux and the forum being my friend, i found that it is located in .profile as oppose to bash_profile previously. I'm not sure which profile i should be amending as i cannot find bash_profile.

I'm trying to add a line for virtualenvwrapper so that it can be sourced every time a new terminal session is launched but it isn't working.

nano .profile

Then adding...

source .local/bin/virtualenvwrapper.sh

to the end

Saved and exited but it doesn't work. Have i missed something or do i have to add anything in the script?

This has probably been answered elsewhere but can't seem to find it and apologies for the duplicate/basic question.

I want to simply be able to display the file size of folders in a directory.

Running du -h lists all the folders but it also includes files in the directory. I'd prefer it to display similar to the below...

Documents Size mb Temp Size mb Pictures Size mb Videos Size mb Total size

Bonus if i could get the total at the end included. Is the possible through a simple command?

How can I back up my whole system and be able to restore perfectly to where I was? I have installed some nice themes and customized quite a few things (graphically) and wouldn't want to repeat this process if I need to re-install.

I guess my question is, do I have to only backup the home folder or do I have to do the whole system root folder. Many topics have advised not to backup the root folder but has let me confused.

I have no problem installing Ubuntu from scratch again and importing my home folder, as long as it gives me everything back in terms of the UI and custom themes etc. I am not fussed about the actual data such as Documents, Videos etc. I have alternative methods for these via cloud based solutions. Also, I have some commands in fstab but not sure this is stored in the home directory as well?

My idea was to use rsync and use

sudo rsync -aAXv --delete --exclude=/dev/* --exclude=/proc/* 
  --exclude=/sys/* --exclude=/tmp/* --exclude=/run/* --exclude=/mnt/* 
  --exclude=/media/* --exclude="swapfile" --exclude="lost+found" 
  --exclude=".cache" --exclude="Downloads" --exclude=".VirtualBoxVMs" 
  --exclude=".ecryptfs"

Then set up a cron to schedule this.

I've just moved over to Linux (Ubunutu 18.04) from Windows.

I have a WDNAS which I have mounted and works fine here.

mkdir mnt/NAS
sudo nano /etc/fstab

//192.168.1.17/wd_nas mnt/wdnas cifs credentials=/home/ubuntu/login.cred,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0

Running sudo mount -a mounts as expected and I can see the share fine. It also appears in the gui Nautilus file manager.

The issue is, after a reboot the mount appears to have gone. It doesn't appear in file manager. It only works when run sudo mount -a.

df -h shows it mounted. //192.168.1.17/wd_nas 3T 1.2T 1.5T 30% /mnt/wd_nas

cat /var/log/syslog/ |grep wd_nas
Mar  6 20:51:22 ubuntu systemd[1]: Mounting /mnt/wd_nas
Mar  6 20:51:22 ubuntu systemd[1]: Mounted /mnt/wd_nas

If I run ls -la /mnt/wd_nas I can see the files I have placed there as test but if I navigate via the gui (nautilus file manager) I can't see anything?

So my first assumption was permissions but I checked and confirmed. Directories and all subs are chown to user with rw access. Googling frantically for days, I've tried almost everything I could find. Even topics relating the network not booting before fstab is being run, so adding _netdev and even configuring systemd. I've even tried to create a bash script to sleep for 20s and run mount -a via cron at reboot. Nothing! Although it doesn't at all appear to be related.

Now I'm here. Would you be able to help?
