This question is an obvious updated version of How do I remove a malformed line from my sources.list?. In Ubuntu 24.04 and later Ubuntu software sources have been moved to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu.sources. The objective of this question is to get at least one updated answer that is suitable for merging into the original canonical question.

As a starting point here is what the default ubuntu.sources file looks like in Ubuntu 24.04.

Are there any Ubuntu installation scenarios which still require manual partitioning? By "manual partitioning" I mean using the Something else option for partitioning of the pending Ubuntu installation.

On new installations of Ubuntu 17.04 and later a swap file is created by default instead of a swap partition. Among other things this saves valuable disk space on the SSD for users who have SSDs. For the purpose of limiting the scope of this question so it will not become too broad I am making these three assumptions.

• The computer has an SSD or NVMe that has enough available disk space to allow Ubuntu to be installed on it without giving Ubuntu less than the recommended disk space for a normal installation.
• Partitioning a small amount of disk space to install the bootloader and installing the bootloader on it can be done automatically by the Ubuntu installer. I know that sometimes the Ubuntu installer has problems correctly configuring the bootloader, but I am making this possible problem outside the scope of this question in order to keep it from being too broad.
• The Ubuntu installation is Ubuntu Desktop, not Ubuntu Server as I also mentioned in the question's title.

The Ubuntu installer includes a user-friendly option for installing Ubuntu alongside Windows. This option is designed to automatically create the necessary partitions for Ubuntu while preserving the existing Windows installation. Maybe this option doesn't work for some multiboot scenarios. Therefore I am including it in the scope of this question.

I've got dysfunctional Minimize / Maximize / Close window controls in all my apps in Ubuntu 24.04. If I maximize my window to full width by clicking the maximize window button, then all of the controls that are located in the 4 cm. wide area of the screen on the right side of the window don't work. I can still close the window normally by right-clicking its icon in the Dock and selecting Quit.

Maybe it's not relevant, but I can also reduce the size of the window from maximized to a smaller size by double-clicking on the panel. Another clue is that I have two HDMI ports on my computer. One HDMI port is for the graphics card and the other port which is currently unused is for the integrated graphics of the CPU.

I'm running Ubuntu 17.10 in VirtualBox and the keyboard shortcut for switching to a new workspace doesn't work. Please show me a screenshot that shows how to switch workspaces from the desktop environment in Ubuntu 17.10 without pressing the keyboard shortcut.

Does Ubuntu MATE offer more features than Xubuntu for users with HiDPI screens and computers with sufficient RAM? If so, what are these features?

Icons sometimes disappear from the Panel notification area when Ubuntu 14.04 starts up. Not the same icon disappears every time, and only one icon disappears at a time. This happens infrequently, and I have also seen it happen on older versions of Ubuntu. The next time I start up Ubuntu, all of the Panel icons are back in the notification area of the Panel where they should be.

Here are some examples of icons that have disappeared from the Panel notification area at startup.

• battery indicator
• network indicator
• Thunderbidownload managerrd Mail
• sound
• clock
• icon (gear in Unity / ⏻ in GNOME) for accessing functions such as Lock/Log Out/Suspend/Restart/Shut Down, etc. from a dropdown menu

All of these icons have disappeared from the Panel at least once, however the indicator icon for Psensor temperature monitor application which usually takes about one minute after startup to appear on the Panel notification area has never disappeared from the Panel at startup.

How can I make a missing Panel icon reappear without rebooting the operating system? I would prefer a general solution that works for any of the missing icons in the list.

Ubuntu 12.10, Wireless not working

I received my new Dell Vostro 2420 last week and just got around to upgrading from Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) to Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal).

Unfortunately, like many others (after researching the issue), I no longer have Wi-Fi. I have tried every sudo command given that worked for others and still can't get my wireless to function.

I can connect via Ethernet, just not via Wi-Fi. As a matter of fact, when I use Fn + F2 to turn on Wi-Fi, only my Bluetooth comes on.
