I was recently given a used external SSD and I want to connect it to my laptop, which is running Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS. When I connect the SSD via USB, Ubuntu does not seem to detect it. I do not know how the SSD was previously formatted or with which OS it was used.

No sign of the drive in Files (the file manager) or Disks (the partitioning tool). No sign of the drive in lsblk output.

It appears to be represented by this line in the output of lsusb:

What should be my next steps for diagnosing/solving this issue? Is it worth upgrading Ubuntu?

Is it possible to assign the first workspace to the secondary monitor, so that all windows in the first workspace appear on the secondary monitor, and all other workspaces appear on the primary monitor?

I'm using GNOME on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to switch the focus between monitors in GNOME on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS? I do not want to have to move the cursor between monitors, or Alt-Tab to the window on the other monitor.

Alternatively, I would be fine with a solution that assigns the first workspace to the secondary monitor, so that I can simply switch to the first workspace in order to switch to the secondary monitor.

I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on a Dell Latitude 3520 laptop, with an integrated Intel GPU. I have a second Dell monitor connected via HDMI. These are the steps to reproduce the problem:

1. At the end of the day, I run Suspend and close the laptop lid.
2. The next morning, I open the lid to resume, and I get a black screen.
3. I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and get the lock screen.
4. I enter my password, then get another black screen, but I can move the cursor and it changes shape, as if it's passing over clickable elements on the screen; so it's as if the screen is unlocked and my windows are still there, even though the display is black (except for the cursor).
5. Finally, I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 again, get the lock screen, enter my password again, and then the display finally resumes and I can see all of my windows again.

Unfortunately, I cannot seem to reproduce this issue unless I allow the laptop to sleep overnight. Simply putting it to sleep, closing the lid, then opening the lid causes it to resume from suspend without issue. So the problem seems to come from allowing it to sleep for an extended period of time.

I have not yet tested whether the issue still occurs without an external monitor connected.

I also observed the same behavior when this laptop was running the latest version of Pop!_OS, so it is not specific to Ubuntu 20.04.

Are there any known fixes for this problem? Otherwise, how should I investigate the issue further?

In Pop!_OS, Alt-Tab is used to switch between windows of different applications. In Ubuntu 20.04, with "Switch applications" set to "Alt+Tab" in the Keyboard Shortcuts settings, Alt-Tab switches between the entire set of windows for each application, meaning that switching to the next application brings all of that application's windows to the foreground.

I would like to know if it is possible to configure Ubuntu 20.04's Alt-Tab shortcut to operate like in Pop!_OS, so that it switches between windows of different applications, without bringing the entire set of windows of a given application to the foreground.

I'm running 19.04 and I followed Full font hinting not working in Ubuntu 18.04 to enable full font hinting. It works for graphical applications such as Chromium, but not my terminal (urxvt). How do I enable full font hinting for urxvt?

Here is a side-by-side screenshot of urxvt (left) vs. emacs (right). emacs' font is slightly crisper. I'll admit the difference doesn't look that impressive, but at work I use a 4K monitor with the resolution set to 1920x1080, and for whatever reason the difference is much more pronounced.
