I have started to use a PC in my house as a server to learn and expand more my knowledge in the IT field. Currently running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, at the moment being used for samba, minidlna, and local ssh.

I've been using Nordvpn in pretty much all the distros I have ever installed for almost 2 years, but I never had the need of using ssh or minidlna until now.

Basically if I have Nordvpn activated on my server I can still ssh into it using the local IP address however the connection is terribly slow, like A LOT.

I wanna say it takes anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds (it varies) to the server to execute a command after input. If I disconnect the VPN, everything works amazing.

As for minidlna, I could say the case is almost the same but with the difference of minidlna not working if vpn is active. (At least on my xbox, because I can still user samba with or without vpn)

Not sure if there is anything I could do to have both services working with my vpn, I have sshd settings modified since default settings is an open door for hackers.

So I recently installed a home server to practice remote access, media file share etc... Currently SSH or Samba service work perfectly through out all devices in the network, however I wish to view a specific folder from my xbox using the Media Player app.

I set up the minidlna.conf file to what I presume is the correct settings since the recent experience I had with setting up samba. Restart service, force-reload, verified status and it shows as active.

Nothing, nada.

I'm no expert obviously but I believe it has to do with the port in the .conf file but I just have no idea which port should be there. Should I open I new port in my router? How secure is it to open ports from my modem?

So yesterday I was installing a couple of distros in a new computer I got, when I was creating a Live USB through the command line with the DD command and I accidentally chose the incorrect device. (Pretty smart I know)

My hard drive is a WD Passport 4 TB which makes any recovery tool take quite some time to analyze.

I had 4 different partitions on this hard drive, 2 of them encrypted (I remember the password and all) a ext4 partition and a FAT32.

The only way that I know to recover files is using testdesk or photorec but they don't seem to be finding the encrypted part of the partition only the non encrypted one.

At the moment I'm trying to recover data with Gpart but it's been a few hours and nothing yet.

Anyone know an idea of how I could do this more efficiently ? (Recover the data from the encrypted partition)

Partition was encrypted with LUKS using the gnome disk utility.

I currently have a friend's computer that he got and has Windows 8 OS that we are actually trying to get rid off.

He would like to use Ubuntu as his main OS. He got the computer second hand so he does not know the BIOS password and that's an issue because the BIOS seems to be blocking USB booting.

Tried cmospwd software in cmd in windows but it seems that it does not work on a 32-bit system.

So I tried to just do it hardware and remove the CMOS battery for a few hours. I could not find jumper to clear the CMOS in the motherboard. Does anyone know how I can do this? The laptop is an ACER ES1-531

If any additional info I may provide that can help please do let me know.

EDIT

As an alternate solution as per a recommendation from below I saw that I could install the software using a different computer, but looking into the solution makes me wonder on how to do it since both on my computers are BIOS no UEFI, maybe I'm confused or just stressed about it.
