Questions[contrast](ubuntu)

By doing high contrast to ON, it is changing icon theme automatically. The changed theme does not look good. Is there a way we can avoid this from happening? And more surprisingly, when I turn it off, it changes icon them to yet another style which is not good looking either. To regain the original set icon theme, I have to reboot necessarily because Alt + F2 and pressing r to restart the session does not help.

This I ask because I want to make use of High Contrast but I am unable to because it affects icons badly.

I've recently installed Xubuntu 18.04 on an old refurbished ThinkPad X250. It's working well, though one thing that would help usability a lot would be if I can increase the screen contrast. The blacks aren't especially dark, and the whites aren't especially bright - it's just not a very high-quality LCD - and it causes some eyestrain, especially when most applications are using lower-contrast colors that are intended to be readable on higher-contrast displays than this one.

To help things, I'd like to find a way to change display contrast settings and increase color contrast - if such a thing exists - or failing that use a post-process shader or similar tool to make dark colors darker, light colors lighter, and increase contrast that way. Prudent choice of xfce theme and application color schemes has helped a little, but global contrast adjustment tools would help much more.

I have already tried changing gamma settings. This makes the blacks darker, which is great, but it makes the whites darker too. So it doesn't really help anything.

I have also tried xcalib, and while it does have a contrast setting, contrast can only be decreased and cannot be increased using this tool.

Surely there must be options here. What can I do to make my screen easier to look at?

I have sensitive eyes and need to be able to invert dark text on a white background in Firefox Ubuntu. So far I can't find a straightforward way to do this, and Firefox doesn't register the Ubuntu high contrast theme. Any thoughts?

I would like to tweak my system so that the window under focus stands out more. The contrast in the title bar between active and inactive windows is quite hard to see.

I hit this issue the most when I have a lot of terminals open across many 30" monitors and have no idea which one currently has focus.

An ideal solution would be that the window is obvious just from the brightness of the title bar without needing to reach for the mouse or do fiddly alt-tabbing.

but these are either for unity/compiz, require a mouse or are just for terminals (and it would be nice to solve this for all apps).

I have tried the "Windows Blur Effects" add on (see How to change color of the active/inactive window?) but it makes gnome very slow under its default settings and I'm unable to open the settings from the "Extensions" tab in gnome-tweak-tools to make it less heavy.

I've got an e-ink display and would like to disable redshift on just this screen, but keep it enabled on the other two monitors. How do I setup this? Is it possible to increase contrast as well? (The Chrome high contrast extension is good for the browser.)
