How do I change from the prefork to worker mpm on Redhat Linux 64bit.

  1. Edit the /etc/sysconfig/httpd file. Change

    #HTTPD=/usr/sbin/httpd.worker

    to

    HTTPD=/usr/sbin/httpd.worker

    and restart the apache service.

    I was able to compile Apache 2.2.22 with the following command to enable worker MPM

    ./configure --with-included-apr --prefix=/path/to/install/apache-2.2.22 --enable-so --with-mpm=worker

  3. On RHEL7 using Apache httpd version 2.4.6 one can change following file and load alternate mpm i.e prefork or workers or event

    Modify following file based on your requirment:

        /etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-mpm.conf    

LoadModule mpm_prefork_module modules/mod_mpm_prefork.so
#LoadModule mpm_worker_module modules/mod_mpm_worker.so
#LoadModule mpm_event_module modules/mod_mpm_event.so

    systemctl restart httpd
