SSH from Windows hangs when using insert mode in vim on Dreamhost: Why?

  • 0

I have SSH set up using Cygwin on Windows XP SP3 to Dreamhost. It works fine except that when I edit a file with vi and use insert mode (eg press 'i' and type in some stuff). I then try and hit escape and ZZ to save/exit and it hangs instead. My edits aren't saved and I have to kill the session (locally) and kill the vi process on Dreamhost.

This is highly annoying. It's not reliable either. Sometimes it does work.

Also, this happens with PuTTY too.

Subversion server running on VPS incredibly slow: how to diagnose?

  • 3

We're running a Subversion server on a Linux VPS over HTTP (so the URL is http://repository/svn/project/trunk) but it is stupidly slow. By slow I mean at most about 4KB/s checkouts and checkins. Test downloads from the VPS seem to be just fine.

Where would I start looking for information on this?

FWIW it's running Ubuntu 8.04 and Linux 2.6.18 (yes I know that's old).

Can you get access to detailed GMail usage over a period of 3+ months?

  • 1

Let's just say that you want to prove that unauthorized access has happened to a GMail account. You know from where that would've occurred. Google's "Last Account Activity" shows currently active sessions but what if the suspected access happened a month or more ago? Does Google keep records about how the account has been used? If so, hwo would you go about getting them?

Convenient Windows equivalent to tail -f logfile?

  • 30
Locked. This question and its answers are locked because the question is off-topic but has historical significance. It is not currently accepting new answers or interactions.

Is there some convenient alternative to this on Windows? I always miss this away from Linux. And no I don't consider Cygwin or some other bash port to be "convenient". :)

Either a small app that'll do it from the command line or will have it open in a window. I need to be able to essentially pause it too, which won't affect the log file, but will allow me to scroll up through the buffer.

Suggested config for PHP VPS host on Linux for low memory

  • 1

I'm looking at using Linode at a VPS host for a PHP Webapp. Linode offers a variety of Linux distros. I'm basically after a config that will absolutely minimize memory usage while still keeping the site performant. So how should I configure it?

  • I've heard nginx has a smaller footprint (and is often faster) than Apache;
  • I want some form of opcode cache, be it APC, eAccelerator, Zend, XCache or something else;
  • I'll be running MySQL 5;
  • Suggested distro? I've heard Arch Linux is fairly barebones (I'm used to Ubuntu);
  • I'm using GMail for the domain email so need nothing there;
  • Linode seems to offer a DNS service separately (for free) so I won't need to run DNS servers will I?
  • Anything else I can do to keep memory usage low?

Is it possible/advisable to run VMware Server ESX/ESXi on a laptop?

  • 20

The idea of having a small footprint hypervisor as the primary OS on a laptop or desktop where every "real" OS is a guest appeals to me. Now I realize this software is more typically used on blades and the other servers but can it be done on a normal PC? Should it be? What requirements are there (eg hardware/BIOS/chipset)? Is there a performance impact for doing so? Is it a good/bad idea?

Title says it all really.

It can sometimes end up that development and IT are at loggerheads over this sort of thing. What level of documentation do you expect when you're expected to install, patch, maintain, start, stop and diagnose a solution running across one or more servers?

Whats the current most effective folding farm hardware setup?

I'm interested in getting a folding farm setup but I guess this question can apply equally well to any computation-intensive cluster. Basically the goal is to:

  • Maximize performance in terms of (typically) GHz/$ (of course different CPU families have a different value of GHz);
  • Minimize space; and
  • Minimize power usage.

Suggestions?

How do you find what process is holding a file open in Windows?

  • 613

One thing that annoys me no end about Windows is the old sharing violation error. Often you can't identify what's holding it open. Usually it's just an editor or explorer just pointing to a relevant directory but sometimes I've had to resort to rebooting my machine.

Any suggestions on how to find the culprit?

How best to script selected tables and data on SQL Server 2008?

  • 2
Locked. This question and its answers are locked because the question is off-topic but has historical significance. It is not currently accepting new answers or interactions.

The SQL Server Management Studio has the ability generate scripts. The problem is that it breaks on identity columns. I can't find a link to this bug at the moment but Microsoft basically declared it as a "feature".

This is particularly important for:

  • Seedning a development or new test environment; and
  • Replicating data from production back to test or development.

Is there an easy solution to this that actually works?
