My apache2
(Ubuntu 12.04
) over some (variable) period of time comes to unusual system resources utilization.
I'm positive that I don't have that amount of traffic and dos/ddos are pretty much out of list because no web server restart can do anything to dos/ddos.
What are the symptoms?
System load (uptime
command) shows 2
- 2.5
- 3
. On 8 core machine, usual load never goes above 0.8
unless something other happens, often it is 0.1
- 0.2
.
top
command proves apache
is the one to blame.
Why I'm making big deal about tolerable system load?
It seems like disk I/O is also increased (temperature 2-3 celsius up), I would rather to avoid this bacause both hdd's are several years old. And I don't know where is this going.

Any help is appreciated.
Since no one answered this, I shall, in hope that someone might find this useful.
I solved this problem not before utilizing
mod_status
and observing real-time traffic. Turns out that several sites - several apache'svhosts
was having long lasting, self-initialized http requests to somephp
scripts. Thatphp
scripts was some Wordpress security plugin cron scripts - they were doing site scanning and they had some nasty bug that was preventing scanning termination and successful exit (this info is founded later). I cut those off and problem was immediately gone.Moral of this story is, if you fall in trouble like this, among all other checks:
mod_status
.
