I'm having an issue in internet connectivity with a particular DSL provider, and after lots of research it has boiled down to the following.
Let's say there are two providers A and B connected through PPPoE (on Ubuntu 14.04, identical configurations options, same standard MTU 1492)
Provider: A
ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
inet addr:192.168.100.1 P-t-P:192.168.100.2 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1492 Metric:1
RX packets:422406 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:383588 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:3
RX bytes:410702336 (410.7 MB) TX bytes:76099873 (76.0 MB)
Provider: B
ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
inet addr:192.168.200.1 P-t-P:192.168.200.2 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1492 Metric:1

collisions:0 txqueuelen:3
RX bytes:4506505131 (4.5 GB) TX bytes:337199879 (337.1 MB)
Here are the tcpdump excerpts from both the providers:

What I have found out is, if I set the value of TCP MSS at 1452 manually, using mss clmaping on the Linux Box for provider B (which is at 1460 can be seen at tcpdump output), then the connection is established successfully.
My questions are, why with one provider tcp is setting the mss value to 1452 (which seems also correct for a PPPoE with MTU 1492) and the other not. The machines are identical and from the same image with same Kernel and same OS versions. Everything is identical as far as I can see. Can the provider control this or where else should I look?
I would really like to know that I have tried everything before changing this manually.
