I work for a vendor company that provides services for metering application usage in datacenter environments. We were recently asked whether we support App-V metering.

I have a question about App-V applications and their representation in the client machine that runs it. If I have a client machine A that runs an App-V packaged application, say MS Word, how does that application appear in the host task manager of the client machine? Does it appear with the same process name as it would normally without App-V prepackaging? (e.g. word.exe would show up in task manager). If not, are there common command line utilities/APIs available on the client machine for accessing this information.

Apologies if this is obvious, I couldn't find many straight-forward answers online.

For some applications I have sequenced, App-V seems to do just what is needed to make the application work correctly. In other cases, however, I have found that a few files that ought to reside on the local filesystem are virtualized. This is a problem because those files don't survive a "repair" of the virtualized application.

I thought that setting a VFS folder to merge mode would allow the application to write to the local file system. However, a simple test revealed that this does not seem to be the case. Obviously, there must be rules dictating which files are read from and written to the local file system as opposed to the VFS.

In what conditions is the local filesystem read from or written to by an App-V application?

We use the stats package SPSS through App-V however although it allows use of custom dialogs and macros, these must be placed in a sub folder within the app installation and so this means that users cannot add new macros.

Is it possible to have an App-V package include a symbolically linked folder to point to a different place so that this remote folder could be updated easily without necessitating a rebuild and redeployment of the package?

I would like to deploy an expensive proprietary software to users in a Remote Desktop environment (users are only using RDP to connect to our servers). I would like to allow them to run and use the full potential on the software, but only on our server. They should not have the ability to copy the program files.

One solution to achieve this is App Locker, but is it also possible with App-V?

Does App-V 4.6 from MDOP 2010 require any AD schema changes?
