I have VHD file attached as a disk (Disk 2 on screenshot below). It has only 1 partition formatted in FAT32 (so Linux clients can write something there). It got full, so I want to extend it. I used Hyper-V tool to extend the size of the disk - but I can't "expand" exiting partition:

DISKPART> expand vdisk maximum=50000

DiskPart has encountered an error: The parameter is incorrect. See the System Event Log for more information.

and there is nothing in the Event Log (or may be I'm looking at a wrong place?..)

it's on Windows 2008 R2. Any idea how can I extend my disk from 30Gb to 50Gb?

I have a physical disk with two partitions, an old OS partition (with MBR) of 296GB and a RECOVERY partition of 2048MB (a default DELL recovery partition), both are not in use. I have successfully resized the OS partition from 296GB to 174GB with the following command:

DISKPART> shrink

which shrinks to the maximum shrinkable space. However, the partition only uses 56GB and I want to create a partition of at least under 128GB (to be able to create a VHD of it). When I shrink again, I receive the following error:

DISKPART> shrink desired=50000

Virtual Disk Service error:
The specified shrink size is too big and will cause the volume to be
smaller than the minimum volume size.

According to this post I should defrag, which I did using several tools (open source UltraDefrag seemed to do the best job). It seems that all files are on top of the disk, but how can I check that for sure? And if not, how can I manually defrag/move files, to claim the largest possible consecutive free disk space?

Or: what should I do to shrink the volume to its current used size plus a bit?

(Note: I tried to create a new VHD with the CREATE VDISK command pointing to the oversized VHD for the source-parameter, but here too, the 128GB/137GiB limit prevents success, it seems. Mounting the VHD and shrinking it had exactly the same effect as doing it on the original physical disk, which is why I now try to first limit the physical partition size.)

I am using diskpart to extend a drive that is actually a VHD. I've already extended the VHD. It's on Windows 2003 and the C drive doesn't contain the swap file and the available space is contiguous. However didn't see the Note about the Resource Kit diskpart for download is not for Windows 2003. So I did the extend using the Windows 2000 version. Not sure if this is the reason but Diskpart is sitting there now for about 15 minutes or so and it's only gotta extend by 10GB. Should it be taking this long? Am I asking for trouble now that I've used a Windows 2000 version of diskpart on a Windows 2003 machine (VM)?

I have a Win 2008 Server that won't let me extend a disk. I have used both the computer management and the diskpart tool and both tell me that I have less than 1MB free and can't extend. I show that I have 100GB of Unallocated space and 81.5gb free on the drive. When I reboot the server I can extend the drive but I need to be able to do it while the server is running. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to create a software stripe setup with two physical disks (underneath they are 128K stripe, RAID5 for each). I've read that one can use diskpart, but I am unable to come up with a command that works. This is on Server 2k3 SP2.

I was trying

create volume stripe disk=2,3 align=1024

Diskpart errors out:

The arguments you specified for this command are not valid.

P.S. Tried successfully with a basic disk and a primary partition.
