We are a school and would like to use Visual Studio Code together with the Omnisharp extension.

The students' working environment has the following characteristics Server-stored home directories

• Active Directory environment Samba 4.x is used as Active Directory
• domain controller Students do not have write access to C:\
• Extensions are provided locally as a .vsix file
• Access to the Marketplace is not permitted
• --extensions-dir=H:\vscode\ext is used to redirect the extension directory to the student's server-stored home directory when starting Visual Studio Code.

Unfortunately, students can't install an extension (.vsix). The following error appears:

This behaviour cannot be easily reproduced in another active directory domain. Does anyone know anything about this error message?

I used this code to likewise try to load a .NET Core 3.1 assembly into a PowerShell session.

I used this code:

and I got this error:

System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Runtime, Vers ion=4.2.2.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependenc ies. The system cannot find the file specified.

Then I built my assembly with this command to make it "self-contained":

dotnet publish -r win-x64 -c Release --self-contained

However, now I am getting these LoaderExceptions:

System.TypeLoadException: Could not load type 'System.Object' from assembly 'System.Private.CoreLib, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=7cec85d7bea7798e' because the parent does not exist.

Am I missing something in my dotnet build statement? or do I need to include an additional assembly?

NOTE: I also have dotnet 5 preview installed.

On Windows Server 2008 R2 core I use dism.exe and the featurename: 'NetFx3-ServerCore' this feature is not available on Server 2012 (Windows Server 8).

Using the standard 3.51 Installer on Server 2012 Core tells me: "You must use the Role Management Tool to install or configure Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5"

In the GUI version (of Server 2012) I can do this and it downloads a package from Microsoft.com, but how do I do this on Core?

The server is running on:

• Windows Server Standard on SP2
• IIS 7 with ASP.NET 1.1
• IIS 6 for SMTP

The server hosts many websites running ASP.NET 1.1. These websites use the built in SMTP server on IIS6.

The SMTP works fine for a while but after a few weeks or months, It will stop sending emails. I tried sending one via Telnet it seems fine so the SMTP server is not the issue.

I tried restarting the Application Pools but it had not effect whatsoever. I also tried restarting IIS 7.0 and IIS 6.0 it still will not send messages.

The only temporary way we found to fix this was to restart the server.

Is there an ASP.NET cache that we can clear or is causing this issue?

UPDATE:

Got the fix!

It was a hunch but I restarted the Print Spooler and DNS Client services in the server and now emails are sent successfully.

But I still do now know why this happens for ASP.NET 1.1 projects.

UPDATE 2:

Issue appeared again today! I got lucky I thought I had to wait weeks to test it again.

I started by restarting the DNS Client service. No effect still cannot send emails. I then restarted the Print Spooler service and to my surprise it was the culprit! ?????????

How is this even, what, why? huh?

I disabled the Print Spooler permanently. Email still works. I do not think we print anything or if the Print Spooler does any other tasks other than printing.

If it does do anything please comment below.

UPDATE 3:

The fix was temporary. I found out today that WINSOCK refused connections from ASP.NET but accepted connections via telnet mail.

Still trying to find out why this is happening.

UPDATE 4:

Well finally made a reboot with the WINSOCK corruption fixes applied. Hope this holds forever and the bug does not reappear.

How do I install .NET 4 on Windows Server 2008 R2 from the command line or PowerShell?

This post shows how to do it for .NET 3.5 using dism.exe and PowerShell. I am guessing that, since the .NET 4.0 binaries need to be downloaded first, these instructions do not work for .NET 4.
