One of our sites have moved to a new locaiton and I have been battling with the fibre provider to install the new connection at the site. Currently, we run a 5G connection as a backup connection at this site (as a secondary WAN on our Firewall), but due to the IP changes (which is static on the fibre, but not on 5G), our VPN to this side is down of course.

My question is, would DynDNS be a solution for the VPN to stay up - granted to change the local ID of this VPN to the DynDNS hostname? Secondly, would there be any delays when the IP changes (like drop the connection briefly while it updates) or any other considerations I need to take into account?

so we're a University campus, and in DNS Manager, all the students phones, tables, etc, are registering their A records in DNS. We don't want them to. Ideally, we'd just have domain joined devices registering/updating their DNS records.

We've done the following:

• DNS: Right click on domain in fwd lookup zone > Properties > Changed "Dynamic Updates" to "Secure only." (it was previously "Nonsecure and secure")
• DHCP: Right click the respective DHCP Scope > Properties > DNS Tab > UNCHECK "Enable DNS dynamic updates according to the settings below"
• DNS: Delete all records from the student subnets (from every DNS server)

It seemed like it was working for a little while, but then every hour, on the hour, I start to see old records repopulate Windows DNS Manager.

What are we missing? The main push for this was, we had a DNS Squatting issue, where a student's phone's hostname was the same as one of our servers, which prevented end users from accessing that server via the DNS name. Temporary mitigation was to create a CNAME for it, as it appears Dynamic Updates don't update CNAMEs, but we'd ideally like to prevent all non-domain joined devices from registering in DNS.

I have a small internal network of physical machines running hypervisors, which in turn run several KVM Ubuntu virtual machines. How would I setup an internal dynamic DNS server so that when I run a script to create a new virtual machine, that VM could automatically register itself in the DNS server?

Bind seems to be the standard DNS server for Linux, but it seems designed for a much more "static" DNS model. Dynamically updating this would require a complicated script that would have to SSH into the DNS server, edit configuration files, and then restart the server. This doesn't seem like a very elegant solution. Are there better options?

I saw a similar question, although they're asking for a solution for a public setting on Amazon. My servers are entirely private, and I don't want to rely on an external VM host or Dynamic DNS provider.

I'm setting up a failover system for DHCP and DDNS. The software being used are ISC BIND and ISC DHCP, running on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

serverA runs DNS01 and DHCP01, serverB runs DNS02 and DHCP02. DHCP failover is set to a 128-bit split (half the zone on each server), wich is working correctly.

serverA is set as the master DNS, serverB is secondary (slave).

Where should DHCP02 point its dynamic updates? Can a slave zone be updated with DDNS entries and then be AXFR'ed back to the master, or do I need to point all DDNS updates to DNS01, both on DHCP01 and DHCP02?

I bought a domain name on godaddy.com let's call it www.website.com, but my server has a dynamic ip, how do I resolve this issue?

What I've tried:

get a dns account at dyndns.com let's call it dns.dyndns.com, so I set up godaddy to forward the domain to dns.dyndns.com.

problem: When the user goes to www.website.com, they see dns.dyndns.com in the url bar. Bad

So then I set up the forwarding on godaddy to forward with domain masking, but then the problem is now that users can't even see url paths/get queries/ or hash marks anymore!

`www.website.com/folder/search?id=4#ajax=4` becomes just 

www.website.com in the url bar. bad!

What do I do?

Ok so, say my godaddy domain name is mysite.com and I have a dyndns account called redirect.com. I set up a cname record on www.mysite.com to go to blah.redirect.com. This works, but when I go to www.mysite.com it shows me the contents of www.redirect.com instead of the contents on blah.redirect.com, what gives?
