i've 600gb of data's from Mac Users, saved in a disk formatted in HFS+. A lot of folder and file name contain 'final spaces'. I don't know how users inserted them , but the result is that via Samba, a folder named "Customer ABC " (with the final space) become for example "EHFJ~1". In addition, users used special charachters like • and others strange file name.

How to massive rename that files/folder removing final spaces ? Is it possible using a linux / mac os script ?

For years I've used the strong-armed-duo of these two suckers...

sudo chmod +a "localadmin allow read,write,append,execute,\
 delete,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,\
 readsecurity,writesecurity,chown"

sudo chmod +a "localadmin allow list,search,add_file,add_subdirectory,\
 delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,\
 writeextattr,readsecurity,writesecurity,chown"

to, for what I figured was a recursive, and all-encompassing, whole-volume-go-ahead for each and every privilege available (for a user, localadmin). Nice when I, localadmin, want to "do something" without a lot of whining about permissions, etc.

The beauty is, this method obviates the necessity to change ownership / group membership, or executable bit on anything. But is it recursive? I am beginning to think, it's not. If so, how do I do THAT? And how can one check something like this? Adding this single-user to the ACL doesn't show up in the Finder, so… Alright, cheers.

I was investigating a problem on a Mac OS X 10.6.8 Server, where users were complaining of access slowdowns. Network throughput slowed to a crawl. It felt like the server was overburdened. System metrics showed the data rate at the NIC to be under 10MBps, while the web management interface for the Promise VTrak 610fD RAID chassis showed 40MBps. The chassis showed 8500 IOPS for one array.

Using fs_usage, I observed AppleFileService doing a RdMeta on a particular HFS+J volume at an excessive rate.

The problem was resolved when I temporarily ceased sharing the volume on disk6. I would like to know what data are associated with these disk block numbers (40905, 40906, 40907, etc) on the device listed.

What tools can I use to identify the file(s) associated with these blocks?

I have a Snow Leopard with a case-insensitive file system. I wonder is there a way to convert the FS to case-sensitive without having to format and then reinstall the whole OS. In Linux there are utils like parted that enable to change the partition FS (at least ext2 to ext3 for one), is there something similar for Mac OS X. I mean that case-sensitivity seems to be a small option to change, does it absolutely require a format+reinstall of hd?

I have a volume with files on it that will need to be copied between Mac, Linux, and Windows machines. I want to ensure that there are no surprises with:

  • file size
  • filename length
  • filename character set
  • number of nested directories

Am I correct to assume that anything (in the above list) that is legal in FAT32 will be also be legal in NTFS, EXT3, and HFS+?

If not, is there a script/utility I can run, without actually copying the files to all of these types of volumes, that will print a list potential problems?
