Questions[hyper-v-server-2012](server)

We are currently running VMWare ESXi, with 1 Windows 2008 R2 Standard instance, 1 Windows 7 instance and 2 Linux instances.

So, recently I wanted to upgrade my server, because there were a lot of things happened. I couldn't find Intel 1GB multiport adapter, so I get Dlink's adapter, but it was not supported by VMWare. Another issue is that our hardware NAS is extremely slow, and their technical support is dud at best. 20MB/s of RAID5 with NIC teaming and only iSCSI really can't say much in term of performance. So I have encountered Starwind VirtualSAN which can only run only under Windows. Therefore I plan to migrate my VMWare into HyperV.

We have only 1 Windows 2008 R2 Standard license available. But as I read on Microsoft site, Windows 2008 R2 Standard is eligible for 1 VM and 1 host. This Windows 2008 R2 is responsible for Citrix Remote Desktop.

I have successfully performed the migration, but I have a few question remains before performing the live migration.

1. Since I can run 2 Windows 2008 R2 Standard total (host + VM), should I run Windows 2008 R2 Standard on top of Windows 2008 R2 Standard host, or is it better with Windows 2012 R2 HyperV host? Is there any new features in 2012 R2 I should know about than 2008 R2 counterpart?
2. VMWare's Ubuntu support has been excellent, and it is very fast. How about HyperV performance? Anyone ever tried to compare Ubuntu server on HyperV and on VMWare?
3. Is it better to let them VMs access iSCSI from their host, or just allocate fixed VHD to them? i.e, 100GB for VHD + 2TB of iSCSI, or just put 100GB VHD and 2TB VHD? The iSCSI will be cached by about 16GB cache RAM on the host. I really have to install Starwind on HyperV host, since I have another server which currently accessing iSCSI too.

Environnent is full Windows Server 2012 R2.

I have a Hyper-V cluster on which I host a testing fail-over cluster file server with 2 guests. Guest cluster is running and file server role installed and running fine with many shares on it. For now a single drive is hosting the data.

Since it is impossible to resize a shared vhdx I wonder if I choose the right solution for my needs. File servers has to be VMs.

What would be the solution to extend the data drive when it will get full ? Any solution without multiplying the number of volumes ?

EDIT : I would like, as I'm used to be on open source environments, to end up with a full failover file server on which I could extend the data volume without down time and to avoid using twice the necessary storage as for a DFS cluster without shared volume.

I'm trying a PoC for RemoteFX and am having issues adding a 'RemoteFX Video Adapter' to my Win8 Enterprise VM. I'm working on section four of this link and just don't have the option to add the video adapter to the guest. HyperV sees the card and acknowledges that I can use it. I have verified I'm running Windows 8 Enterprise in the VM.

I'm running Server 2012 R2 DataCenter with the HyperV role and the card is a Quadro 2000.

I have installed Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 on a server that had Hyper-V Server 2012. When I did this, the standard Windows.old folder was created. I now would like to remove that folder safely. The standard way to do that with a full GUI would be to use Disk Cleanup, but of course I don't have that option on Hyper-V Server.

Is there a formal way to remove that folder in this scenario? I know if this was Server Core I could install the full GUI including Desktop Experience, but that would be a lot of nonsense just to cleanly remove a folder.

My primary reason for asking, as opposed to just doing rmdir /s or some such, is that the Windows.old folder has a lot of junctions, and I don't want to break anything in the production OS copy as part of doing this.

I have the free, standalone core Hyper-V Server 2012 running on my physical machine. I set up remote management from my Windows 8 client.

When I proceed to create a virtual machine I would like to install the OS from a usb thumb drive but it is not recognized in Hyper-V Manager on my client (when the USB is plugged into the physical server) nor is it recognized in Server Manager under File and Storage Services > Volumes

Is there a role needed to recognize external usb flash drives? Because I think this standalone version is just core Hyper-V role and that's it... but this is such a basic functionality.

Can anybody comment.
