I have a guest VM setup in my Hyper-V environment that I'm trying to us dynamic memory with. The following settings are being used...

  • Startup RAM: 8192
  • Minimum RAM: 2048
  • Maximum RAM: 8192
  • Memory buffer: 20%
  • Memory weight: Medium on the slider

I think I might have something configured wrong because as soon as I boot up the VM and go into task manager on the guest VM to look at the performance tab I see that the server has the following usage... enter image description here

The funny part is that NOTHING is using that memory (below sorted with highest mem at top)... enter image description here

Why does it show such a high memory usage?

Per an answer provided I wanted to show the resource manager too. It shows the exact same thing. enter image description here

I have a 2012 R2 Hyper-V host running System center endpoint protection. There are two virtual windows servers being hosted by it.

I have all .vhdx drives in a folder on d:/server/

Can I trust the antivirus to scan these files and find viruses or do I need to have an antiviurus program in each virtual machine?

If I scan these files manually endpoint protection almost immediately returns no viruses found, which makes me wonder if its even trying to scan them.

I am using Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Core. It is one of our Hyper-V hosts. I manage it from my workstation using Hyper-V manager, and manipulate files through the admin share.

I created a VM, then copied a VHDX into the Hard Disks folder. I then attempted to start the VM with that VHDX, but (since it is an old image and asked for an Admin password I don't have), I decided I would build from scratch. I shut down the VM, removed the drive, and attempted to delete the VHDX so I could create a new one with the same name. I get "The action can't be completed because the file is open in System". This has been happening for several hours. I initially suspected our AV solution, but it can't be taking this long to scan a 17GB file (I think).

Now, I've had this happen on Win7 systems before, and there's a plethora of methods for forcing a file to be deleted. In this case though, I can't just go to the host and boot it offline, or install SuperKillerFileDeleterUltraGuaranteedBox.

So how do I get rid of it?

P.S. I also realize I could just name the new VHDX something else - it doesn't have to be the same as the VM name. But that's just insulting, and anyway I can't just leave an unused 17GB file on the server forever.

I have a domain joined HyperV Server Core 2012 R2 machine, and a domain joined service is enabled and allows access from this computer. By default, the WinRM firewall exception for public profiles limits access to remote computers within workstation which was in-place upgraded from Windows Pro 8.1 to Windows 10 Pro. Prior to the update I was able to use Hyper-V Manager to connect to the 2012 R2 server to manage the VMs on that machine. After the update I get this error:

An error occurred while attempting to connect to server "HYPERV01". Check that the Virtual Machine Management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server.

The operation on computer 'HYPERV01' failed: WinRM cannot complete the operation. Verify that the specified computer name is valid, that the computer is accessible over the network, and that a firewall exception for the WinRM the same local subnet.

[Close]

The workstation and server are on the same subnet, and I checked that Remote Management and some other Hyper-V exceptions are enabled in the firewall. How to I correct this?

EDIT: I'm not sure anymore if the Win10 update had anything to do with it. By entering the first command on the accepted answer on the hyperv server, i was able to connect again via the Hyper-V manager in Windows 10 with no other changes (not even the winrm set command was needed). So it could be that a recent Windows Update on the server reset the firewall rules, as enter-psssession hyperv01 was also failing, I later discovered.

I am in the midst of migrating to a Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster and am currently configuring the first host to connect to the iSCSI CSV via MPIO.

I "think" I have everything working properly but when I try to create a log file to verify via the MPIO properties (GUI) or invoke the "mpclaim -v" powershell command (or command prompt) while elevated as Admin, I get the following errors;

GUI - Failed to probe MPIO storage configuration. Access is denied.

Elevated Powershell/CMD - File creation failed. C:\Windows\System32\MPIO_Configuration.log. Error 5 Failed to write MPIO configuration to file. Access is denied.

I have only been able to locate one article relating to the same problem but the solution was not applicable to me. Someone made a reference to " Local Security Policy/Public Key Policies/Encrypting File System/Properties/Certificates" and to allow something there but when I go there on the local machine, there are no keys or anything.. just a message that says "No Encrypting File System Policies Defined".
