Does IPMI always include KVM? Is it always able to mount remote .ISO's and show viewport image?
I have a Scientific Linux 6.1 system, which on a Supermicro server which supports IPMI. It's also running with Upstart, which affects how serial consoles work.
My system has a serious problem which requires that I log in to Single User mode to perform some maintenance. I am standing in front of the KVM attached to the server (the VGA console), and I can see all the BIOS and boot messages. The boot sequence goes through the motions, then tells me there is a corrupt filesystem and that's it. I am never presented with a prompt to log into the box, and the screen doesn't say anything about maintenance mode.
I finally connect to the host using the serial console, and I see the following prompt:
* An error occurred during the file system check.
*** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
*** when you leave the shell.
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D to continue):
- Why does this prompt for Single User mode appear on the Serial Console only?
- More importantly, can I get this to appear on both the Serial Console and on the attached Keyboard/Video/Monitor?
My Kernel commandline is this:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-131.17.1.el6.x86_64 ro root=UUID=blah-blah-blah KEYBOARDTYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us console=tty0 crashkernel=auto console=ttyS2,115200n8r
If I have a server with only power and ethernet coming out the back, and suddenly I need to adjust BIOS settings, I gotta plug in a keyboard/monitor/mouse somehow. Either the servers are all on KVM switches of some kind (useful, but expensive) or I gotta bring the server to the keyboard/monitor/mouse or vice versa.
I almost always have a laptop with me, and it has a keyboard, monitor, and mouse built-in. Why can't I use that?
I'd like a way to plug the laptop in to the VGA and USB ports of a server, and have the console.
Is there a way to do that?
Anyone know of a good replacement for Synergy2 that is cross platform and open source? I've been looking around since I upgraded to Win7 which Synergy2 doesn't play well with - which doesn't surprise me since it doesn't look like there has been active development since 2006.
We had a bunch of Windows 2008 servers configured by a tech, then racked with and hooked up to an IP KVM. Unforunately, the monitor used during configuration was a widescreen LCD, and now Windows is initialized to a resolution out of range for the KVM as well as the screen onsite.
We found that we can edit HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet... and then reboot the machines. But I'd prefer not to have to make all of them reboot.
Is there a way to restart the video driver or otherwise change the console resolution remotely, without a reboot?
