I realised this is a very specific question, but I am wondering if there is a way to install FreeBSD on a machine using only SSH access to a Ubuntu LiveCD on the server?
I am looking for a LiveCD with a running ssh daemon. I need it because i want to connect to an abandoned server and make a backup. The server hasn't a monitor.
Suggestions?
I'm using FOG as a TFTP / PXE server and would like to be able to boot a FreeBSD LiveCD (specifically pfSense, but it could be any LiveCD, really); I've found HOWTOs for booting a "netboot" BSD but they all seem to use a BSD server. So:
- Is it possible to PXE boot BSD from a Linux server?
- Is it possible to PXE boot a BSD LiveCD?
- Is it possible to PXE boot a Linux LiveCD?
My main motivation is to be able to boot small LiveCD images (e.g. < 100MB) that I may only use once and don't want to burn a physical CD for.
What is the easiest way to make a Windows boot CD that can be customized?
Specifically I would like to run DriveSnapshot from a boot CD so that I can restore images from a USB drive. I tried UBCD a while ago but was never able to get it to work due to no USB support on the PC.
I know there are a lot of *nix based CDs out there, but Drivesnapshot needs to run on Windows. It works fine on a simple boot floppy but not many PCs have floppy drives anymore.
I'm setting up a large software RAID array using MDADM, and don't want to waste a drive bay on a system disk. Unfortunately, the server I'm working with has trouble booting from a USB drive, so I'm attempting a workaround.
I want to create a LiveCD with Knoppix or some other suitable distribution, then use the USB drive as a mountable storage device to keep all my admin scripts etc on. I plan on running several services including:
Samba SSH SFTP Subversion (SVNServe)
I'm used to running a headless Fedora server, and that would be ideal, but I'll take what I can get. Can anyone suggest a good approach for this problem? Specifically - an appropriate distribution to use, how to configure the LiveCD, and how to get it to automatically mount and run certain scripts on the USB drive?
