For a number of reasons I have been trying to find a way to encrypt my backup tapes. I'm currently running Bacula for my backups and it's support for Drive based encryption is I have to call a script or something to set the key in the drive.
How can I set the encryption options on the tape drive in Debian Linux?
EDIT UPDATE: for others seeing this thread. For me the issue was the scsi card itself for some reason. I replaced the Adaptec with an LSI and it works great now
Regardless of if I'm backing up the local server or a "disk-disk-tape" the speed writing to the tape drive is only around 350-500MB/min (not sec...min).
That's painfully slow.

So, I'm at a loss. All of the hardware is decent and compatible. I'd love to just rip and replace but I'm also wanting to figure this out.
EDIT: also getting these errors on the HP Tape Tools:
The drive is experiencing polling (1.0 / sec. polling rate) on initiator ID 7. Polling can interrupt the normal operation of the drive, and significantly reduce performance.
Don't know what that means though.
We are currently trying to diagnose an ongoing issue with a clients backup in Backup Exec. They have an LTO4 Drive that they are backing up to. When they backup it fills the tape (which has a capacity of 800 GB), even though it is only 427 GB of data. It then ejects the tape and asks for more media). If you check the capacity on the tape (which has been fully erased before the backup) it tells you that it is using 800 GB on the tape, even though we have only backed up 427 in the backup job.
We originally thought this was the tape drive but when we do a seperate test backup to an external hard drive it backs up properly.
It is almost like anti compression!
We are using Backup Exec 11d. Anyone any ideas?
LTO tapes, Maxell in this case, are often marketed as having 30 years or more shelf life when stored under "optimal conditions"
Is there a way to get a good estimation to the shelf life, given parameters such as relative humidity and temperature etc?
Obsolescence of the tapes aside, is there a way of determining the impact to shelf life of any deviance from the optimal. In other words how many years are lost when storing say 1 degree above the specified range?
Apparently LTO-4 drives can both read and write LTO-3 tapes. Are these tapes fully compatible with LTO-3 drives? I'm interested in real life experience more than theoretical vendor-touted compatibility :)
