I have a website in which different suppliers will have their own Mandrill/Mailchimp API to use, and our website will use this API to send emails through their API and using their templates.

While configuring the API mandrill needs to add DKIM and SPF to the domain TXT records.

TXT record for mandrill._domainkey.domainname

So I can't add the same host twice on the domain DNS, how to work around this issue?

I'm looking for a way to test some email-sending capability when developing an app locally, i.e on http://localhost:[some-port]

I'm using Mandrill by Mailchimp with it's official Mandrill API Module on Node.js.

Mandrill requires to set some DKIM/SPF settings for the sending domain and I'm not sure how to set my localhost as a Sending Domain.

From their docs:

You'll need to add SPF and DKIM records and verify ownership of your sending domains before you can send email through your account. Mandrill will not send any email from unverified domains or domains without valid SPF and DKIM records, including public domains like gmail.com, yahoo.com, and more.

So basically Mandrill requires setting the Sending Domains and the DKIM/SPF settings for each domain

I've successfully setup my main & live (www.something.com) domain's settings but now I want to also setup localhost so I can test when doing local development

Not setting localhost as a Sending Domain, caused "rejected/unsigned" errors

Of course if I don't set localhost as Sending Domain, any attempts to send a message results in this error:

Is there an actual way to set localhost as a Sending Domain?

Note: I am already testing with a Test API key

I'm configuring a new web server and i need to make emails from my PHP scripts to be sent. Most messages should be sent using mandrill SMTP and some "directly" from my server to email services. I registered an account at mandrill and configured postfix server according to this tutorial. I created /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd and edited main.cf file. I set relayhost to mandrill SMTP.

relayhost = [smtp.mandrillapp.com]

If i try sending messages when postfix configured this way - all messages being sent using mandrill SMTP. I tried it and it works. But as i said, i need some messages to be sent directly. I determine, which emails should be sent using SMTP and which directly, by setting different sender("from") email addresses. In the tutorial i mentioned i found that to do what i need, i need to use sender_dependent_relayhost_maps option and remove the value of relayhost.
I use the following config

relayhost =
sender_dependent_relayhost_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/relayhost_maps

I created /etc/postfix/relayhost_maps and it looks like this

[email protected]   [smtp.mandrillapp.com]

Now all messages should be sent directly, except for messages from [email protected] that must be sent using external SMTP. The problem is when i try to send messages with this configuration - all messages being sent directly(i see this in gmail when i receive it).

I tried putting in /etc/postfix/relayhost_maps different SMTP hosts, different email addresses but all messages still being sent directly.

Please, help me solve this problem.

I am running a Postfix mail server for my client. Mail is relayed through Mandrill. Mandrill requires a valid DKIM signature.

This works all right for relayed mail. That is, mail sent through Roundcube (on the same host) works fine. Mail sent from Icedove (from client's machines) works fine.

But mail sent from the local host is rejected by Mandrill. Reason: "not signed". Sending from local host means here using the mail command, or Postfix itself. The latter is dramatic, mail sent by MAILER-DAEMON is also rejected.

What I know is that the sender's email address is reflecting correctly the domain. Using the wrong domain name also has Mandrill rejecting the mail for the same reason.

So for relayed mail, my sender address is [email protected]. For locally sent mail my address is also [email protected].

What I understand is that Postfix does not have to DKIM sign the mail which is relayed through Mandrill. Mandrill itself is fetching the DKIM from my DNS server.

Nevertheless, DKIM is set up properly in Postfix. When I send directly (not using Mandrill as relay host) my DKIM is valid. Disabling DKIM completely in Postfix does not make a difference for Mandrill.

I am not running DNS on this host, it is an external DNS. The domain is administered using Virtualmin.

I don't know where to start to look, so I did not include any configuration details yet. If you indicate which information is relevant, I'll post it.

Client's DNS is managed by Office 365. Office 365 helpfully creates an SPF record:

TXT @ v=spf1 include:spf.protection.outlook.com -all 1 Hour

Even extra helpfully, this is automatically generated by Office 365 and can't be changed apparently. All I want to do is include Mandrill, but it looks like I'm SOL.

Apart from moving DNS management to another host (which would be painful, but doable), have I got any options?
