In the backup server one of the tape has frozen and I want to move this frozen tape to bad_tapes pool. Please let me know how to do this. I am using veritas netback
I had a server that was decommissioned & replaced last year, and since the server was no longer in use, I deleted it's client & backup policy from the NetBackup Admin Console shortly afterwards.
I recently got a request to restore a file from the old server, however when I specify the source client for the restore, I get an error message saying:
WARNING: server (backupserver) does not contain any backups for client (oldserver) using the specified policy type (Standard) as requested by client (backupserver).
[Ok]
In addition to that error, I can't seem to run a Client Backup report on the old client any more to determine what tapes I need to recall in order to re-index and restore the files...
Additional info:
- My backup policies are daily incrementals retained for 4 weeks, weekly fulls retained for 2 months, and monthly full backups which are retained indefinitely... I'm trying to restore the monthly backup set.
- All my offsite tapes still appear in the volume pools, however I can't seem to pull up any reports as to what's on the individual tapes, or at least, any tape that was written to prior to August 2009.
My questions:
- Does deleting the client somehow remove NetBackups ability to ever restore files from the old system, even if the backups have a retention period of infinity?
- Is there a way to restore the file from the tape, assuming I can figure out which tape I need?
I wish to setup an automated backup system for three Windows XP machines in the same building to a Linux server out on the WAN. I visit each machine every few months and make a disk image for a bare metal recovery. I need a way to automatically backup user documents (including Outlook's mailbox file). This is for a small daycare/preschool and therefore needs to be a low budget project.
There will be no qualified sysadmin on site daily to deal with problems. The backup needs to run without user intervention and without fail.
The file recovery needs to either be accomplished remotely (i.e., they call me; I push the recovered file back to their system), or simple enough for a non-techie to operate.
As I see it the candidate systems are Amanda, Bacula and BackupPC. Reading the docs I see that BackupPC is probably out of the running because it does not do Volume Snapshot Services (VSS). What is your practical experience with these systems? Is there some other system that I should be considering?
My question is... what multiplexing factor in NetBackup is recommended / do you use for Oracle RMAN backups over 1Gb/s management network to LTO3?
JB
Background:
With enterprise backup tools like NetBackup, there is the concept of Multiplexing which is the combining of data from a number of backup clients simultaneously in order to feed modern high speed tape drives as quickly as possible.
The number of simultaneous client data streams interleaved is determined by the Multiplexing factor. The higher the multiplexing factor, the more data fed to the tape drive, but the slower any restores.
As overall restore speed is mostly determined by the messing about (log incident, determine if tapes are available, recall from offsite, load, inventory, etc. ) than by the actual tape restore speed, I feel confident using a high factor for filesystem backups.
Oracle backups with large datasets, which are more often restored all together, pose a different challenge to filesystem backups.
My tape drive needed to be replaced. I am using netbackup 6 and 2.6.9 Linux. When I try to re add the device I used /dev/nst0 as it is the nstX device.
/proc/scsi/scsi shows: H
ost: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 05 Lun: 00
Vendor: HP Model: Ultrium 3-SCSI Rev: G63Z
Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 03
However, when I go to drive Diagnostic in the GUI I get
Vendor Name: -
Model: -
Firmware: -
Drive path: MISSING_DRIVE:HU10548V5B
Drive Type: hcart 3
And when I run the Diagnostic the first Drive Information Test returns "Drive not DOWN, aborting test'
Anyone know what I need to do?
