I have a script being loaded from iPXE.
What I want is to make the script fall back to boot from a local hard drive (or CDROM) on failure to boot from the san.
The idea is allow installation of an Operating System onto the SAN target from local CDROM or USB drive.
I can't see anywhere that in the iPXE documentation that tells me how to boot from a local internal drive. How do I do this?
I have an existing PXE syslinux environment and I'd like to set up a similar EFI-based netboot environment.
I'm a big fan of the various menus as seen in the screenshot below and I'd like to find something equivalent.

I've never booted with PXE or network share, but now need to reinstall an OS on my laptop with a dead DVD drive and no budget to replace it.
Looking for a free product to host the boot image on Windows 7, then connect to it via PXE or Network Share. I don't know which is better or easier. Looking for advice on that too. This is a one-shot problem and solution.

My problem isn't one you encounter on a daily basis, yet I find interesting enough to share and ask for help. From the beginning: the academic scientific group I am a member of (we are focused on networking-related stuff) got today an ooold SPARC server, which we intend to use as our www/shell account machine (currently we use a pretty poor virtualized solution).

The big question is: how do I find out if it's functional and install an OS on it? The thing hasn't got a VGA port which would make things way easier.
We've got a cable that looks like a DB-25 -> COM cable, but it's been reported not to work on a windows laptop with hyper terminal. I've been thinking about monitoring the network ports for any kind of traffic to confirm it's functional and then fiddling with network boot to install any OS on it - is it any good of an idea?

As you can see, the thing on top was not a Sun Netra, but a StorEdge S1 disk array. The other thing is that I don't have a key, and the manual @lain says that you have to turn it on in the diagnostic mode to get a serial console. My google skills seem to be bad, @voretaq7, because I can't seem to find any information regarding turning on the diagnostic mode :-( Could a locksmith make a key that would fit provided I found a blueprint of the original key?

That's a big amount of ports there :-o How should I attach the StorEdge to the 4500? I browsed through it's manual and it seems like plugging one end of the SCSI cable to SE's out port and the other to the ,,1'' marked port on the 4500 is a good idea.
As for the DB25->COM cable - it turns out it was custom made, and probably isn't a null-modem one. Where could I find a diagram so I can make one?

I have an interesting situation.
I'm trying to us a Linux based machine to allow Mac's to Netboot (similiar to PXE boot) by running a DHCP service in parallel with the "global" DHCP server.
The local DHCP server hands out IPs in a private subnet, e.g., 10.168.0.10-10.168.254-254, while the "global" DHCP server hands out IPs from the IP range 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.1.254.
The local DHCP range is only supposed to be used in Preboot Execution Environment and Netboot. The local DHCP server is something I have control over, but I do not have access to the global DHCP server.
I have a filter to only allow members with the vendor strings "AAPLBSDPC/i386" and "PXEClient".
PXE works fine, but Netboot has a quirk.
The Apple systems that haven't been connected to the network yet can Netboot fine. But once it grabs a "real" IP address from the global DHCP server, it will "save" it and request it the next time we want it to netboot (which the local dhcp server won't give it).

I tried zapping the pram with the key combo, but it didn't work. It still reports the same thing in the DHCP logs. I'm looking into additional random options in the DHCP config for now.

What seems interesting, is if I go into the operating system, turn off en0, then restart and try NetBooting (therefore releasing the IP?). Netboot will pickup an IP from the local server and Netboot correctly.
Do you have any ideas to why this works?

I've just added more options so my Local DHCP Option Count is 11 vs the Global DHCP Option Count of 9. And it still won't grab the IP address from my local DHCP server. Not sure what I can do, I shouldn't need to release the IP every time I need to NetBoot.
So it looks as if it will take the first DHCP offer, is there anyway to make sure that the local DHCP server responds first?
Do you have some insight you could share with us?
