I have an OpenNMS system configured and up and running.

I have a few Linux (debian) servers and I need to monitor if a specific service is running on them. This must be done using only ssh access. No SNMP or agents. I must configure OpenNMS to log-in on these servers and check if this service is running.

I've read about Polling, but I haven't found instructions on how to configure OpenNMS to access a remote Linux computer and check if a service is running.

Ideally what I'm looking for is a way to specify in OpenNMS, an IP Address, username, password and the name of the process I want to monitor.

How can I do this?

For scheduled outages, We need to enter timings so that these period will not be considered as a down time. So far so good. However, if someone doesnt define a blackout window and we need to adjust after wards, is that possible in opennms? If yes, how can we do it?

We are using OpenNMS to monitor a pool of servers, and we have a problem with SMTP in one particular box. OpenNMS is "spamming" us all the time with DOWN/RESOLVED messages for that particular service in that server, and I wanted to mute those notifications momentarely but couldn't find how to do that. I know that I can disable ALL notifications or disable SMTP in ALL servers, but that's not what I want.

I'm used to muting a particular service in Nagios, but is it possible in OpenNMS?

I would like to let users view opennms data without logging in. That is, the whole ui in read only mode.

I realise that I can create a guest user for this, but people then need too know the username and password for this user.

I am looking to pitch a comprehensive monitoring system to my manager, and have been considering OpenNMS. However, I have seen glowing praise of Nagios on here and I was hoping someone with experience could help illustrate the key differences for me. Do their focuses differ, or are they just competitors?

If some background helps, we run 6 on-site servers (File server, PBX, proxy, application, etc.) and two off-site servers (Website / development) along with a couple of switches and a router. The monitoring service we install will be running on a separate converted desktop running freeBSD. All of our stuff runs either Linux or a BSD derivative.

We are looking to spend no money to implement this (sigh).

EDIT It looks like openNMS offers a more comprehensive solution closer to what I want. However, because it is written in Java and the port is not in the official ports tree yet, it has been vetoed. Now begins my Nagios would be better than just MRTG campaign. Thanks for the fast responses.
