Questions[openoffice](server)

Unfortunately the software that I'm using (Alfresco) requires the installation of openoffice, and not libreoffice. If I try and configure it to use libreoffice I receive errors during startup. If I try to install any of the openoffice packages:

yum install openoffice*

I receive errors for all packages similar to:

Package openoffice.org-langpack-bg_BG is obsoleted by libreoffice-langpack-bg, trying to install 1:libreoffice-langpack-bg-3.4.5.2-16.el6.x86_64 instead

Then it proceeds to try and download libreoffice. I don't see anything in man yum with regards to installing obsolete packages. Is there any way to install obsolete packages via yum and not their newer counterparts?

I'm currently working on an ASP.NET application which is intend to convert .doc, .docx, .xls and .xlsx files to PDF. We are attempting to do this through a third party library which makes use of OpenOffice to achieve this.

I have deployed a small console application which works correctly however I have also deployed an ASP.NET application which uses the same code but cannot convert office documents to PDFs. To me this indicates some configuration issue on the server but I have no idea what.

I've looked at the event log on the server and have found and entry with the message:

The server {82154420-0FBF-11D4-8313-005004526AB4} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

I can confirm that the GUID in that message is for OpenOffice on the server. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to configure IIS to get this to work?

how to download and install OpenOffice 3.1 in headless mode on my CentOS server...I am working with a java app that needs OpenOffice as just a service for form generation....I am having a difficult time...any head on what steps to take would be great...

We are starting to do some project and application roadmapping, and am thinking about OpenOffice (and StarOffice) as a replacement for OfficeXP and Office 2000, which is on the bulk of our PCs.

• Roughly 120 users and PCs
• OE Windows XP Pro on virtually all desktops.
• Office 2000, Office XP, properly licensed (knock on wood).
• No Software Assurance
• Windows Server 2003 and Active Directory
• MS Exchange 2003 - not sure yet about Exchange 2008
• Outlook 2003 on top of lower Office installs
• "newish" but aging PC inventory .. very little change in the last 12 months.
• Windows SharePoint Server for the intranet .. it's use is growing

How much should I consider the Open Source alternatives?

What sort of things should I be concerned about?

What hidden issues and second-order consequences should I be aware of?

I am looking forward to hearing pros and cons, and any other comments.

I need to setup OpenOffice in a linux box that will never have X installed. Every time I run the setup program of the OpenOffice installer it complains that the system does not have an X Terminal. I am using OOo_3.1.0_LinuxIntel_install_wJRE_en-US.tar. I have done this headless install for version 2.4, but we are having some performance issues and we will like to test the 3.1 version. The rpm -i *rpm does not work, since it is also looking for libgnome inside it.

We are trying to install the system in a CenOS 5.1. Any ideas are welcome?
