Questions[password-protected](server)

How can I password protect an IIS directory when I only have FTP access to the server? I can't adjust any IIS settings or add users or anything like that.

The answer to:

IIS Basic Authorization ala .htaccess/.htpasswd in apache

does not help as I only have access to the server via FTP. I just need to password protect a directory.

I've tried several variations of a web.config file. I can get a basic HTTP auth form to pop up when a user attempts to load a page from my test directory, but I can't configure the authentication part. The server complains that:

Parser Error Message: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

whenever I add an <authentication> section to my web.config.

I'm grateful for any help anyone can offer.

Edit: I don't know what version of IIS is running on this server, but here is the server tag from error messages:

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:1.1.4322.2490; ASP.NET Version:1.1.4322.2494

I've been trying to setup a password protected directory in a SSL website as follows:

/etc/nginx/sites-available/default

server {
    listen 443:
    ssl on;
    ssl_certificate /usr/certs/server.crt;
    ssl_certificate_key /usr/certs/server.key;

    server_name server1.example.com;

    root /var/www/example.com/htdocs/;
    index index.html;

    location /secure/ {
        auth_basic "Restricted";
        auth_basic_user_file /var/www/example.com/.htpasswd;
    }
}

The problem is when I try to access the URL https://server1.example.com/secure/, I get a "404: Not Found" error page.

My error.log shows the following error:

011/11/26 03:09:06 [error] 10913#0: *1 no user/password was provided for basic authentication,
client: 192.168.0.24, server: server1.example.com, request: "GET /secure/ HTTP/1.1",
host: "server1.example.com"

However, I was able to setup password protected directories for a normal HTTP virtual host without any problems.

Is it a problem with the config or something else?

Is there a way to password protect a directory in UNIX? Something like:

~$ cd dir
~$ Password:
~/dir$

I was looking at the users in my mysql.user table and noticed that there are 3 roots.

root@localhost
[email protected]
[email protected]

When I first discovered this none of the roots were password protected. I managed to password protect root@localhost but I can't figure out how to password protect the other two. How would I do this via the command line?

In my Nginx setup I would like to password protect some website, except when I access it from my ip at home. How do I set this up?

Also, except for getting access to my home pc, is this safe?
