Is it possible to change the sender address of mails that are already queued?
The relay-server we've used so far has silently changed its policy a few days ago and rejects now mails without a verified sender address. We've now adapted sendmail's settings but a few mails with the old sender address are already stuck in the queue (Sender address rejected: unverified address). Can I change their sender address?
Is there a simple command to find out the current number of messages in the linux mail queue? mailq dumps out a verbose list, but it's not convenient for a quick overview.
I'm using Ubuntu and postfix.
We're seeing some (maybe?) strange delays when submitting individual emails to our local Postfix server.
To help diagnose the issue, I wrote a little test program which sends 5 emails:

email 2 890ms ( 88 ms)
email 3 973ms ( 83 ms)
email 4 1088ms (115 ms)
Discounting the handshaking in the first email, that's about 90ms per email. These timings have also been corroborated with another test app written by someone else using a different codepath, so it appears to be server related.
I turned on detailed logging and I can see that the delay is between the end of message \r\n\r\n and the receive:

The time intervals tell the story (discounting the handshaking required for the initial email) -- each email is waiting about 60-90 milliseconds for postfix to queue!
This seems .. excessive .. to me. Is it "normal" for postfix to take 60-90 ms for every email you send it? Or do I just have unreasonable expectations? I would expect the local postfix server to queue the email in about 20ms, tops!
I have a pretty annoying problem here. I have been testing an application and have created some test e-mails to bogus e-mail addresses (not to mention that my server isn't really set up to send e-mail anyway). Of course, sendmail is not able to send these messages and they have been getting stuck in the sendmail queue. I want to manually delete the messages that have been building up in the queue instead of waiting the 5 days that sendmail usually takes to stop retrying.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and /var/spool/mqueue/ is the directory in which every how-to I have read says the e-mails that are queued up are kept. When I delete the files in this directory, sendmail stops trying to process the e-mails until what appears to be a cron script runs and re-populates this directory with the messages I don't want sent. Does anyone know how I can get rid of these messages permanently? As a side note, I'd also like to know if there is a way to set up sendmail to "fake" sending e-mail. Is there?
The load on my server is very high, even though there doesn't seem to be much disk activity and the CPU is idle. Using sar, I can see the run queue is getting full, but is there any way to see what's in the run queue?
